My friend was going to nominate me, but I told her not to bother, cos I wouldn't do it. I think it is stupid.

I have no problem donating something to a charity, or even doing some positive fundraising, but I see no merit in this craze.

Do something positive, like helping somebody, and pass it forward.

thumbs up I agree - I've been nominated and have been threatened to be nominated by others, but I won't be doing it. Brain dead activity, or maybe I'm just boring?

I agree with Molly - challenge someone to do something nice for someone, and then pass the challenge on - good idea.

This cause has raised over a million euro for Motor Neuron research in Ireland and 100 million for the same research in America. That shows merit.
This is doing something positive. It is using the power of social media in a good way to create a viral craze, it helps people who suffer from this disease and it is passed forward with nominations.
Just because something like this happens doesn't mean we have to stop helping other people. This is just anew way of raising awareness and funds in a positive way.
I can' see any merit being against something like using the power of social media for good and raising awareness for an unfunded research cause....

Well, if you and Molly come up with a challenge or whatever, that raises the amount of money and awareness for such an underfunded and under-researched disease, well off ye go....The rest of the stupid and brain dead will probably double the awareness and funding by continuing for another couple of weeks..

I agree it is underfunded, as are most research. I also agree this stunt has raised much needed funds.
But I still do not think pouring a bucket of icy water over your head is a positive thing to do.
Maybe I am missing the point, but I think there are much better ways of raising both funds and awareness.

Social media has great power to do good and raise awareness. It also has great power to lead to stupidity and privacy issues. Here we see how a craze that went viral has raised serious research funds for an under-funded disease. So I was just saying that it must have merit.
The pouring of the bucket of icy water over your head was the key to this campaign. If you watch most of the videos, they actually create quite a bit of laughter. And the ability to nominate extra people led to a "dare" type situation which exponentially increased the awareness and donations.
I think it is a fantastic campaign. How many people would have ever considered donating to this charity if it wasn't for this campaign?
