Has anyone tried it? High fat, low carb. A fad or a worthwhile change in diet?

Hi unlaoised, wave hi fat, low carb diets can lead to grout and mightn't be that healthy.

I don't diet, but I do look after my health, and something like a low GI diet makes more sense to me.

Everyone's diet has an influence on a lot of health issues besides weight, maybe have a look at Patrick Holfords low GI diet books.

Hiya K wave

Ya, I'm familiar with Patrick Holford and low GI. The reason I ask is that my brother has just lost 13kgs on this and swears by it (he's a health nut) but I have read a few warnings about it....so was wondering if anyone else had tried it

I will, JK, if I go ahead with it. Seems it was used to treat children with epilepsy and also diabetes. Hmm hmmm

Back sure it is a pleasure to do, or something you like, because if it a burden or not fun, or not easy, it becomes easy to just do for a while and then one reverts back to old behaviors.

Did you know that diet is a French word, which means to "feed the soul"?

I didn't, I heard that the Atkins diet can work and maybe if someone does it short-term to loose some weight - it's just not healthy doing this for any length of time. dunno

My brother-in-law did try the Atkins diet - he is having problems with grout nowadays.

Ketogenic? Unless you have Epilepsy there is nothing that compares to a balanced diet.

It's been around since the 1920's. Good for diabetics as well, apparently, so there must be something to it?

The reason why is good for diabetic is because there is low glucose intake. In the case of diabetes, since level of insulin is low or there is no insulin at all, low glucose level helps - body does not need that much of insulin than.
I would pay attention on triglycerides, as in a short term it might seem as a "good diet", but after while, since 1 g of carbohydrates provides 4 calories of E, and 1 g of fat provides 9 calories of energy. fat is stored for long term energy used, while carbohydrates might serve as short and long term.
By my opinion, I would stay away of that diet

There is. But the tradeoffs are huge. It's a type of diet I'd recommend for someone that was seriously and badly obese. Nothing long term. I believe it's part of the Swedish Health Care system now, that they put dangerously obese patients on it.... for a short term. And only for a short term. wink

But... one could list out a bunch of things that are wrong about it... but there's no way of knowing unless we know exactly what type of diet it is. And what nutrients, what heavy starches etc etc are involved or not involved. Some of these diets are a bit different than others

The problem I have with a lot of these things, is that there is still so much unknown about food, and various energy cycles. Sure it waa only 10years ago that they discovered, that a cooked egg is better than a raw egg in terms of protein absorption. We're still at the simply stages of working that out. I always fear that if I went on one of these drastic diets that after 20 years I'd have found out I screwed myself up permanently with something. When the easiest diet for me is and will always be a protein loaded, otherwise balanced diet.

I had a friend get hospitalized for eating to much fat. He was clearly overweight but not morbidly obese, and his liver(it might have been his kidney's I don't remember for certain but I think it was his liver) had started to fail. He ate fast food every day and the doctor told him it was the fat in his diet. They had him change his diet, and he's been ok since.
