michaelright: Why do most people mount a bike on the left side, and the same for a horse is usually mounted on the left ,, even left hand people do the same ??
At first I was going to say it might have something to do with the drivers wheel in cars in the U.S. is on the left side.
But you are in Ireland where the wheel is on the right side of the car yet you're asking the question.
Ccincy: When I first got my motorcycle license I was told to mount from the left because the stand was on that side. When I mounted my horse I mounted on the left side cause that's how I learned to ride a horse.
I think this is got to do with the olden times when people carried swords on horse back
As most people are right handed...they will most likely pass a houseman on the right hand side to them...and any threat or attack can be met with force.
A bit like in jousting.
Historically, this is kind of why the vast majority of countries travels on the left hand side on roads and thus traditionally people just continued by getting in to a car or a horse in the same way
A horseman in the olden would likely have a shield which is held by the left hand.
It would be difficult to get on a horse on your right side as your carrying a sword on the right side...and thats the side a houseman would approach you on a lane or a road.

Because that's the side the sidestand is mounted on so the bike (in my case motorcycle) is leaning in that direction to begin with so swing the leg over and pick it up off the sidestand.

I do believe that "most" of the countries in the world drive on the right hand side of the road so it may apply in the United Kingdom but not everywhere.

I never thought about it, but I do mount on the left on a bike and when I learned to ride a bike mine was so old it did not have a kickstand so that theory goes right out the door.
I rode horses since before I could walk but yes it was taught to us to mount on the left.

Maybe in countries like the US its easier to fire at the front of building, pedestrians on sidewalks/pavements (as with drive by shootings) if they drive on the right !
Its one thing they have in common with Pakistan where too they drive on the right (the wrong side of the road to virtually the rest of the world)
Maybe too then, they get some "cover" from those in the driving seat firing at them as they drive on by !
I wonder what road rage is like over there! If I had access to a gun whist driving...I sure would have used it!

I don't know where you get your information from (I'm thinking it's more opinion than fact) as there are approximately 31 countries in the world that drive on the left and more than twice that drive on the right (just google it). Most people in the civilized world don't think in terms of gunfire and driving but I guess we are a tad more law abiding than you have experienced

Hmmm. I'll have to hang out by a school and see what the kids do.
I think it has to do with sidedness. Right sided people are usually more comfortable maneuvering their right leg. This can also show up in skiing and skating where right handed people find it easier to turn left because this involves the right leg.
I thought you mounted a horse from the left because that is the side the horse is taught that you will mount from.

Yes...looking at google your right on the amounts.
Road rage with guns...is better if you drive on the left...you can just hang out of the drives window and shot your way through on coming cars
