After much nagging from my daughter to get out of the house, I have started going to a local Mens Shed.

Okay, her firm has started sponsoring one in my general area BUT it is an area where it is predominantly Vietnamese people and aimed at "those of an ethnic persuasion."

She dragged me along to an Open Day at one near her. A bit more orientated to those of a European or aussie background. Turned out it is part of some "Over 50s Development Condition by local Council whatever ..... but interesting anyway.

Took me a bit to find my "local" one, mainly because the address that my local Council provided does not really coincide to the on the ground.

What do we do there??

Okay, Wednesdays at 9.00am is breakfast. That is it. We eat, they clear off. The 1st week I went they had fillet steak and lamb steaks. Basically eggs and bacon since (different styles).

What else? Okay, there is one 80 yo guy who has come along to give himself something to do. Movies once a month. We really need to get the speakers working as silent movies are not the vogue these days.

Not what I had imagined. I thought they were chock full of machines you could use whenever you felt like it, eg wood lathes, bandsaws, Mig/TIG, mills. Somewhere you could go to make stuff, learn some new skills or teach others.

We have a movement here Happy, they called it "The Men's Shed", a place for men, (especially in rural areas) to get together and "share" something. There was, (still is) a lot of depression and suicide among men in rural areas.
I think it was started during the last drought, (is that right Wash?)

Established in 2007 by the Australian independent community based Men's Sheds to represent, support and promote the Mens Shed Movement and to act as a central hub for information exchange. The Australian Mens Shed Association is funded by the Federal Government to provide initial and ongoing practical support for the development of all Mens Sheds.

From Rob's link:

At the 2nd National Men's Shed Conference in Manly during September 2007 Professor Barry Golding, Men’s Shed researcher from the University of Ballarat, stated in his key note address that “Men don’t talk face to face they talk shoulder to shoulder”. This drew unanimous mutterings of approval from all 350 delegates and the quote became the Australian Men's Shed Associations motto.

Men’s sheds play an important role in the community by providing meeting places where men can find social support and camaraderie.

The Men’s Shed concept was an Australian initiative from very humble beginnings; the idea has now spread internationally with a number of sheds being operated by health authorities in Ireland, England and New Zealand with other interested groups in North America and Japan.

Have you been to one Rob? They sound like fun. Can any man go since they are government funded. Most government funded programs here have restrictions so not all are applicable. I am not applicable for Obama care so my once good insurance is now poopoo insurance. I should be applicable once I leave the work force. Hope I don't get sick between now and then it will cost me a small fortune out of pocketblues

Oh hell I hope I never get sick. grin

Yes it does almost sound like fun.
I'm not on this site as much as I used to be, Happy. I guess I lost interest a bit. I've gradually started working longer hours, mainly for something to do.
I was keen to get into online courses, (MOOCS) but couldn't sustain the interest and effort required.
