but some years ago after learning how to build
several types of smelts, our little prospector
group in our wilder days... decided to build several bowling ball
cannons out of old steel pipe... powder was cheap and we actually
got good at hitting targets about a mile away... old bowling ball
inventory became a problem after a while though..

Thank you 2girl for posting the video, I can never post videos anymore, I have no idea what happened but doesn't work for me.
Anyway we do have some really dumba** people in our country that is for sure. An Anvil really? That could have gone horribly wrong and end up hurting someone. Glad it is the east coast idiots. Though we have our fair share here in California and the west coast for that matter. Hell in our town! But our town is full of people that would love to shoot off anvils! I live in a very hick town.

LoL, yep. All sorts of ways for that to go wrong. From the bottom anvil splitting and spewing fragments to the one being launched deciding to go sideways instead of straight up.

Well after two sep incidents in VA, one in which a numbskull who illegally dug a live 18" cannon shell out of the Manassas Creek Civil War Battlefield brought it home and put it on his fireplace hearth to dry out (a smoldering crater soon marked where a house that used to have 3 people living in it once stood), another incident where three guys attempted to remove the impact fuse from a once fired but seemingly dud cannon shell (and again only a smouldering crater and some shattered brick marked where once say a house with people inside), VA made it a Felony crime to intentionally set off any explosion whatsoever except for discharging firearms and when a permit has been issued in advance by the State Fire Marshal. Very hard to get that permit to blow stumps, and not obtainable at all for anvil tossing, but TG cannon fire is classified as firearms by the State or our civil war re-enactments would be very dull events indeed.

Sounds like a good way to go to jail. Possession of Destructive Devices, Manufacture of Destructive Devices, plus whatever state laws are applicable to setting bombs off. BTW, I prefer Carbon Monoxide for them.
