What would be the next step if they were ordered to dispose of the photos? Hitting them on the head with a big magnet, in the vain hope it will erase their memory? Works for hard drives, so why not brains?

Just hold the magnets close to the hard drive, and wipe them across several times, in the SAME direction.
Guaranteed to wipe a hard drive clean, as testified by some fool who did it once to his Dad's work PC and went to a certain forum for help.

if they were part of a larger collection and he just hadn't thought about updating it, I would not care. If he was carrying them with him and looking at them frequently I would start making other plans....but I would not tell him to get rid of them. I would wait a bit to see if he did that on his own
