Manson is an old man. This is just one more effort for him to be in the public eye. This woman(Star) has her own motive for marrying him. For sure it is far less than Love.(which she says she loves him). It is greed. She will become a rich woman.(Book and appearance royalties) After he dies, and I am thinking he does not have too much time left on this world. JMO

There are different tiers of female attraction for evil - from cad to bad to dangerous psychopath. Most women stop at cad or sometimes bad, but it's all part of the same spectrum.
And she will delude herself. She will rationalise that Manson is in fact innocent, noble or on some higher mission which excuses his deeds. But the whole time she doesn't really trust her own delusion, she probably knows that it's wrong and yet it feels so good - and that's the thrill.
