I think having a Christmas tree at home, proclaims a Christian celebration. Some people claimed atheist.. Why then a Christmas tree at their home??? It looks a bit hypocritical, don't you think???

Heck,what you worry about,its the Winter-Solstice after all! Even the Christmas-Tree isn't Christian,but Pagan!
According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, "The use of evergreen trees, wreaths, and garlands to symbolize eternal life was a custom of the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, and Hebrews. Tree worship was common among the pagan Europeans and survived their conversion to Christianity in the Scandinavian customs of decorating the house and barn with evergreens at the New Year to scare away the devil and of setting up a tree for the birds during Christmastime."

No one new or cared if its a religious thing.I was raised in Soviet Union which was a atheist state and my country mostly muslim majority country. But we always had a Christmass Tree at our homes and Parks for New year celebration. We still do.Soon they will erect Cristmass Trees in every house, malls ,parks and a major streets here. Not bad for a muslim majority country, right? Thats cos we dont care about religion or atheism. We just like celebrating.
And a Lutheran german?? adopted as part of the Christian religion. So if am an atheist, pagan or Agnostic, why celebrate an adoption in a Christian religion???

Just as well,as an agnostic, why celebrate a Christian tradition. Hypocritical??? maybe???
nomoregoodnames: We exchange presents as a show of affection rather than a religious thing, it's just handy to do it on the 25th cos everyone's off work.....I wouldn't have a clue, I'm not an atheist i'm agnostic.
nomoregoodnames: Where else would be put the presents?
Which reminds me of a Christmas Story: Once Upon A Time, Santa was really pissed, overwhelmed and overworked making last minute toys one Christmas eve. At that moment, a Christmas Angel appeared with a Christmas Tree. The Angel said to Santa."Merry Christmas, I brought you a Christmas Tree for your Christmas present, where would you like me to put it ?"... And it is to this very day, the reason why we see Angles impaled on-top of Christmas Trees. The End.
The State (Soviet Union) was atheist, not the majority of people.- Then you shouldn't call it a Christmas tree, call it Muslim tree, as the custom is borrowed form a Christian tradition.

I thought this was a German tradition that was brought to the United Kingdom when Queen Vicky was reigning?
As David Letterman said in one of his top 10. Why is Christmas and Hurricanes alike, because sooner or later you end up with a tree in your living room.
I am an atheist and like x-mas trees, there is something called traditions aswell. I have no clue what santa has to do with religions as i always thought the tradition says he is from north pole its a saga to me and its nice i think. A time when families comes together and enjoy each others company, with or without any religions. Can that be so bad? I dont have x-mas anymore as I do not have any family any more, so this atheist have to look when others have fun, and remember the od days HAPPY CHRISMAS every one

I read that Santa was actually a real person (can't remember the country of origin - Dutch maybe?) named Nicolas, perhaps sainted to Saint Nicolas. The tradition for the folk to leave their shoes outside their homes at the doorstep - wooden shoes? and he would put money and stuff into those of the poor while they slept at night. So when they awoke in the morning and put on their clogs, they would find the money.
the tradition grew from their, where people acted like St. Nick.

Than you, I am very happy to know this cos I dont think many does. Now I can tell others lol thanks a lot
Yule was an indigenous midwinter festival celebrated by the Germanic peoples, Christmas was absorbed into the 12 day Yule celebrations in 336 AD when Pope Julius I declared the birth of Jesus to have been on December 25. Over time with Christianity becoming the official religion of the Roman Empire, Christmas became more dominant than Yule, but is seen as synonymous with it, since it is part of the 12 day celebration. The earliest references to it are in the form of month names, where the Yule-tide period lasts somewhere around two months in length, falling along the end of the modern calendar year between what is now mid-November and early January.
""Shoes outside homes"" we have that tradition on New Year Eve,kids leaving their shoes outside their room, expecting to be filled with presents, fron Saint Basil (not saint Nicolas).
