As a result of the lively debate on the subject of obesity, I thought it would be interesting to have a thread where people can voice their opinion and discuss this topic.

Would you tell a friend they are overweight?
How would you phrase your advice?
Would you suggest an exercise programme, diet etc?

As a believer in freedom of speech, all are welcome, but if you find the topic offensive, please try to argue your point in an intelligent, coherent manner. handshake

Well if I had a friend or relative that was underweight and painfully thin I would chat with the person and say I was concerned for their health and suggest things .

So too would I if the person was very overweight and their health was suffering from being out of breathe and they becoming exhausted by just a mere walk to their gate,

One can be extremely overweight or underweight then I'd suggest to my friend but if they were not at the extreme I wouldn't say anything because it be none go my god dam business to suggest if they were happy with their weight and it was just how I perceived as under weight or overweight,

Omg it's so stormy out and have to hit the shops,

Mornin Stan.....
Well, as we are probably aware by now, me is fat, and me dont care...
however, other people do, and i have been approached on occasions about 'looking after my health' by 'concerned' parties...
Like the word ni**ger, fat is a dirty word, plump, portly, rotund, big boned, puppy fat, its all window dressing to save offense...
Could i tell, a friend they are overweight, NO, because not everyone is as thick skinned as me, I have been fat all my life and there isn't a slur or insult i havn't heard, and thankfully, it matters not one iota what other people think about me, probably because im not, and never have been about image....
Realistically, fat people who care enough about their self image and what others think about them will make an effort to effect change, all others will just carry on carrying on, I am one of the latter, but no sadder for it...
Interesting topics, a reminder of what the forums used to be about...

No, I generally would not, for the reasons Blank mentioned. There is no way out there to speak such without the risk of hurt being done, and quite frankly - anyone overweight or underweight does not need others to tell them what they are. It is not as if they were blind. They know themselves, and I doubt there is anyone out there these days who is not informed about the health risks. Telling someone they are overweight or underweight will hardly have them go 'oh my gosh, I did not notice, thank you so much for pointing it out, just imagine I'd have missed it - the damage to my health it could have caused!'

There are many issues with our modern day society, and many reasons why people lose control over things, from weight (under or over) to drinking habits, drugs, violence and and and. We need tackle what causes it, but that's not achieved by subjecting an individual to embarrassment or hurt.

It is very hard to be overweight, and not be totally aware of it yourself.

When you gain weight, your clothes get too tight and stop fitting you. You notice that.

You stop enjoying clothes shopping, because you don't like buying 'fat' clothes.

You look in the mirror abd you don't like what you see.

Friends do not need me to point out the obvious. They know it already.

If I had a friend who was seriously overweight I would tell them yes, but I'd do it in a discreet and sensitive manner. Such as 'for christ's sake take some excercise and stop stuffing your face you useless lazy tub of lard'......something along those lines.
