I don't have much respect for the breed of person(s)usually behind these kind of cartoons, but they have the right even if they are not actually right.
It seems,we in the West, have the right to critisize, our main religion, which is Christiaty. As well we allow our citizens, non Christian or non religious believers, to critisize Christianity believers. It seems to me this right, critisizing religion,is denied by the Islamists.-

Freedom of speech is a persons right even if I think the cartoons in bad taste and disrespectful,
But to execute these people was an Easey target where these poor people were open and vunerable and targeted,
It is concerning that while fiancé are heavily involved in the Middle East that France was not on high security alert before this yet another tragedy happend.

Without knowing the details, it doesn't look likely that the gunmen were in a position of self-defence, ergo the killings are not likely to be justifiable in my opinion.
As for your title question, it would depend upon the content of the material whether journalists and cartoonists have a right to criticise religion. If the material is propaganda, inciting hatred, or action to harm, then no, I'd say they don't have a right to do that.
If we were to look at WWII propaganda, journalism and cartoon images, I wonder how it would compare to current material.
I'm not sure we can just sit back and claim satire is always okay because we're the goodies and they're the baddies.
Isn't satire in any form, included as a free speach???. If someone, country, religious leaders, heads of states, don't like the satire, directed at them, they have the right,to raise the objections, either by diplomatic means,or go to court.
