After not being employed for about 18 months and then having slight health issues, I did seek assistance from the Government, just because the medication costs were over $150 per month for my medical condition and my income was around the zero mark.

I have had a number of interviews with CentreUnlinked where it has been suggested that I seek alternative employment to my qualifications and experiance.

"What do you mean? I have spent many years studying surveying and civil engineering, and have worked in those area for the last 45 years years."

It has been suggested that I try Hairdressing.

Actually, not sure if this was a suggestion or was used as an example for some reason of looking for "other' employment. confused

This Thursday, I have an interview .... okay, it is Interview #3 with them because

Interview #1 was "I am not working" ....."Please come back and see us in 13 weeks.

Interviwe #2 was "You apprently have some health issues........Please come back and see us in 3 weeks as your circumstances seemed to be different to what we have been informed. You have now been passed on to...."

Interviwe #3 was "You seem to have some health problems. Okay, we will set you up to meet up with us in 4 weeks time to assess you further. During that time, you must apply for at least 10 postions per fortnight."

Hang on there ...... CentreUnlinked did recognise that 6 per fortnight might be appropriate to my experience.

Hang on ...... have you taken into consideration that during this much celebrated period of the calendar year means very limited employment opportunitis advertised????????????????

"I am sorry, sir. Have you satisfied the criteria set down by the Federal Government? I am sorry, sir. It is not the Governments fault that there have been no jobs advertised during your necessary reporting period."

Hi Washwave

So, why don't you volunteer instead... and work just the 2 days that you need to...

You can find almost anything for 2 days, or do you want to continue back in the field that you came from.?

I have cut down this year... and only doing 4 days until May... and really enjoying a long weekend every weekend...

I cant wait to drop to 2 days, and then volley... seems like a beaut way to go??

The reality is if want money from centre link then there is certain criteria you must meet if you are not at retirement age or are medically unwell ..

If you don't want to work then go to school or work voluntary somewhere to meet their requirements ...

This is why I am doing a uni degree to allow me to work within this area .. there is no grey area with centre link its either black or white with no exceptions ...

If you are sick wash then get a doctors certificate exempting you from all work, if this cannot be done, then you will have to join an employment provider and apply for X amount of jobs per reporting fortnight or you will be in breach of your obligations ..

Ask your doctor for a full exemption ...

OR just do as I am doing and fire up a small business of your own, its less complicated ... trust me !! ...

You can retire at any age you like Mr Lookin, just that you cannot go to Centrelink for $ . You need to have enough in savings and super to fund your lifestyle...

Otherwise, you need to search for jobs until you reach proper retirement age, according to which year you were born in... conversing

However, there are ways around it...

If you sell off your property and go live in a tent, with a few candles for company, you can manage it, or you can rent out your house and share live in a room somewhere, etc.. I know, I know, not a terribly good idea...

Wash, if you want a cheap house in the middle of no where... you realise that house prices are down a fair bit... ?

In 1970, I took out a policy with AMP which would allow me to consider retirement at age 50 (this was pre-super for us non-politicians). In 1992 when my workplace decided that I did not have appropriate attractions to continue having the work vehicle while Debbie had 2 good reasons that made giving her the vehicle more attractive, I cashed in the AMP policy and received the grand total of $5,000, or a little bit over, and purchased a vehicle of my own.

I have seen those ads on tv and do smile a bit when it shows Carol & Alice (sometimes Bob & Fred) paying the same amount of super contribution. In 25 years time, the value of the person climbing the steps/escalator/ladder has gone up by $20,000 more than the low life person going downhill downwards.

What I really laugh at is that they show that the super value is around $300,000 - 350,000 in 25 years time when people on this amount of super now are in the struggle zone at today's prices. I have heard that the "experts" reckon that the aim should be for $1 MILLION in today's values for a comfortable lifestyle.

Hi wash2you I see your thread is posted on the Jokes category and I tend to agree that with the unemployment situation being as it is, it's not likely that someone in your age group would find it easy to regain employment.

I personally know of highly skilled ppl in their 30s and 40s who are approaching six mths+ out of work.

Maybe just meet your Centrelink obligations and don't stress wine

If you look at my original post you will see that I only started the CentreUnlinked stuff after my heart attack and having to spend $150 each and every month on medication. After obtaining my Health Benefit card, it is now $18 per month for 3 drugs while 1 drug is cheaper over the counter - $3.50 for 3 months.

During my tax paying working life of 45 years, I have paid (on average)25% of my total gross income to the Federal Govt. Okay, I have been at stages where I have been at the very high taxation rate of 50c in the $1 for my top of the scale earnings - when realistically looked at at End-of-year taxation paid, yeah - around 25%.

Prowler, I have done my Uni degree and graduating after 30 years of working in that industry. It helped me a lot when I did realistically change my life - oddly enough my Uni degree would have been more beneficial when I had my own business before those studies.

Hi JoyD. Stress???? Reason why I stopped working. I have hit the 60+ trail and while there are some positions out there that I could fill, they are usually seeking someone FOU or FOB to fill a position because of costs.

Bottom line of the holy dollar is more important than getting it right.

Being you only have a few years left for your allowable retirement age, why don't you do something completely different..

Something easy, some no brainer job, where you mix with lots of people and just have fun..

dunno

Well, I hope you sort out something soonish... because clearly you did not care for my suggestion of living in a tent for a few years.. grin

That is very high on the list at this time. Just trying to sort out some details for a bit of time camping with friends through March and where we will go to enjoy being away from civilisation (except for a few pubs along the way).cheers

I was originally heading off in April until my heart doctor said she wanted me to do some tests to see if I have a heart .... so put off the long trip until May.

After seeing people around Sydeney, I was going to head up to Grawin opal fields to see if I could find a decent sized black opal - the one I found there is an 'only just' and worth about $2.50, maybe a beer from someone who really wants one for themselves - not really, it is MY Black Opal that I found. Just after I left Grawin last year, 2 guys dug up a 3.5kg opal.banana Massive.peace not a black opal but one mighty big one nonetheless.

My plan is to head northwards checking out the areas I can go seeking precious metals and gemstones. I have seen that there are more than 20 identified "fossicking" areas in Qld alone where I only need a $10 license to muck around in.

wash2u: Let me count the ways.

1. Total lack of upper management support.

2. Small amount went missing from the Infrastructure Budget of $12M (it was a tad over $2M). I was asked to explain where it went. After 6 weeks of working 8am to 7pm, I worked out that it was some suffling down by the Finance section and a couple of managers who had not informed they were diverting the money to other works.

3. The new Director looked at Job Title and did not bother to work out what I was responsible for.

4. Redesign of whole of office layout meant I lost my office and my personal space was to be less than 1/2 of previous. "By the way, your reference material will now be located at the other end of the office due to lack of space in the area now occupied by you and your 5 staff. Yes, we do realise that your total section space is the equivalent of 3 others (okay, clerical staff) in this department but the rest of us do have enough room and the average for the whole building just meets guidelines. Some do have to make sacrifices." I did realise that this space designer had made some considerations when the 5 people in his section managed to squeeze into the space 6 of us previously occupied.

5. I think the crowning bit was the space designer abusing me because someone else had decided to dispose of some of his crap filling up our (previous) work area when he had demanded that we "get rid of all that useless crap lying around."

My mum was reasonably well educated for her time. She had a very good position in David Jones until she fell pregnant. My father was from a well-to-do family who suffered during the Great Depression.

My upbring is summed in the words of Gibbs "Old School."

At around 15 I was spending some time on weekends and school holidays working as a brickies labourer.

At 17, I had my own part-time business running do odd-jobs around houses where some people could not get rid of their rubbish while still getting my education at school (okay, it was dad's car and trailer but I had to pay for petrol, tip costs and my employees wages).

After 4 attempts at getting into Uni (pre-free Labouring days) I settled for doing Certificates at alternate educational places.

In 2002 I managed to graduate from Uni with a degree in something that interested me and then spent 10 years in very well-paid employment doing what I had done for the previous 20 years.

Today, I caught an item on ABC Noon news of a 64yo guy in WA who had left school ay 14 and was a shearer for 39 years before becoming a timber-cutter. Still has his mill but it is not as profitable as it once was. He is now about to start his plumbing apprenticeship.

Now this guy is very fit and active. He and his wife have a well-fitted out home to live in. He could most likely work as a plumber for the next 10-20 years.

What I personally feel is so totally wrong with that is that some poor 16yo fresh out of school with no chance of completing higher education is looking for some employment opportunity suitable to his skill range for the his next 50 years is beaten out of that opportunity for his lifetime skill by some old fart who can get a pension within 12 months.

that old guy just does not want to vegetate on his bum waiting to die while being nagged constantly by his ever loving wife . Good on him . Plenty of work for young people away from the bright lights in Aus where the moneys good . So much so its still taking our tradesman .
