I sometimes notice that people who can least afford to often have large families......i saw an article a few weeks ago about a lady in England who is expecting her 12th child at 32 year's of age with her 3rd partner....supposedly they have to rely on social welfare payments to live.....that is fair enough as it is not the children's fault but it must be virtually impossible to give the amount of attention and encouragement needed to so many young children.....do you think that there are some people who will do anything to get as much money from the state as possible without having to earn it themselves?....
With the case with OctoMom, yes, she was able to get both state and federal social benefits, just to support her 8 babies. While at the same time, she was also able to make more money, as she spread herself in a nudie magazine. Not that, anyone would be dumb enough to buy the magazine with her in it.

The welfare system was designed to help the less fortunate, unfortunately this system has been abused by many & will continue to be unless there is a reasonable solution. Can you think of one?
I know this sounds like a throwaway answer, but I feel that people in that situation 'don't know any better' so to speak
It appears that dependence on welfare is often learned behaviour passed down through families where no one has had the means, education, insight or whatever the case may be to strive for better.
No answers here, I imagine there will always be layers in society as we are all different and not created equally in that respect

not really looking for a solution as people have free will to do as they please.....its just that i dont think it is a healthy attitude to have as children need so much attention and encouragement it must be difficult to rear so many......i would just hope that they are not being used as a way of increasing the income into the home...jmo

you are so right serene......per usual it is always the children who miss out....and it becomes a learned behaviour....

In societies with welfare programs, families with many children get more help, although I do not think they deliberately want more children to collect more (there might be exceptions).
In countries with not welfare programs poor parents have many children to help them while the children are growing up and to have someone to look for them when older.

What evidence do you have that in large families children are neglected, or do not get enough attention?
In large families it may be there are more people to give attention, as well as receive attention.
When my daughter was small, I received many comments about how difficult it can be just having one child and how much more dependent they are on attention from just one person. The implication was that children from larger families are maybe better at interacting with others.
In my opinion, One solution is to stop giving them a pay raise every time they have a child. There is no working person that I know of that gets a raise for each child. I'm sure this will not be a popular solution.

What started as a safety net has become a way of life for many. My own relatives have done this basically. Get a few more babbis to get a better house.

I often worked 70-80 hours a week with little if not no money with no government help. I resent people that think its their god given right to receive the"free money" from government handouts without working a single day in their lives.

It isn't the number in the family that is the problem, but the attitude of the parents.
