It totally depends on the person.
I do consider myself a good judge of character, and have done, and never been wrong.
But err on the side of caution if even a tiny bit unsure.

It's fine esp if you don't live in an isolated area.... but err on the side of caution is probably the way to go.
I've also had many unsuspecting fools be taken in by the red light outside my door - they don't realise it means "danger within, tread with caution".

Else, I'd say it very much depends on the circumstances. Where I live, not a chance if I'd not have my huge wolves. With my Dobes around I am pretty save, but without them.. well.. I'd not even dare live up here at all then
Think internet dating or even just making friends through the internet, can make this a question more pressing as long distances can be involved, and if one wishes to meet up, it might need to include over night stays. Not everyone wishes or can pay freely for hotel accommodations. Probably in 99.9 % of the cases it is safe and fine, but I would keep that 0.01 % firmly in mind and try find ways to create a bit of a safety back-up, even if it is just a friend or family member who will call every now and then, and definitely all details and a photo needs to be given to a friend or family member, of that visiting individual (at least in my view).
