Eventhough Chicago and Mexico City are noted by having equally high crime rate that would not stop me from visiting them, if I wish to.
I was in Mexico city past November for a few days and it was great, not a problem.
There is a place in Central America that has a high crime rate and that will not stop me from going there (and being able to admire the Maya world)
Just use your common sense and be prepared.
