It was possibly one of the most stupid of military amphibious assaults.

Men in row boats versus machine guns mounted on cliffs. I mean, duh! doh

Poor intel, super egos of incompetent commanding generals, etc. A blood bath. Actually i am amazed any actually made it to shore, much less did as well as they did. I can only wonder what the problems were on the Turkish side that prevented total annihilation of the attackers. No analysis I have read yet discusses why the assault was not repulsed at the beach itself.

loL, their egos may believe that, but I suspect something more mundane like an inadequate ammo supply already on hand in the cliff machine gunner positions and the difficulty of getting more ammo and water for cooling the Maxims up there to them in a timely fashion had way more to do with the failure to sink all of the rowboats before they made it to the shore. Truly I would love to know what the Turkish military reports of those days said, but that seems to be denied us.

Conrad, I had not heard that version before. I like it. Kind of sums it up I think.

BTW, there is reasonably accurate (though a slow begining) Paul Hogan movie about that battle.

If you couldn't see the photos, just google visuals 'Canakkalede savasan cocuklar' which means children who fought in Gallipoli. Those children were protecting their motherland, what were the others doing here thosands of kilometers away from their home?
Please type to Google Visuals: Canakkalede savasan cocuklar.......
...............and see against whom you lost the war.

No , we won the war , Turks lost more than most I would think . We lost that battle along with our allies . Where Turkey lost most in the middle east their troops were protected by Allenby's forces including NZ army units . I have read many things about who NZ has really fought tooth and nail against and never have I seen any thing bad said against Johnny Turk .

If you had won the war, I wouldn't have been able to type this post as a Turk. You lost a quarter million lives there, so did we but we saved our land.

Thats not logical what you are saying.Germany has lost ww twice but they still able to type.Losing a war doesnt mean that entire nation get eliminated.
But agree that in Gallipoli Turks havent lost,in fact they had a great victory.
