How would you react?
I'd be on the phone asking questions for sure. I personally think a note should be sent out to parents prior to changes like that...especially with food considering the possibility that the child may have a type of allergy or dietary restriction?

Badly , I would be at the office first thing , one of my sons is a celiac and has a nut allergy . He had to carry an "ANA kit" . He was stung by a bee and the doppy teacher gave him a jab . Teachers can't understand English by the looks as there was never any mention of bees on his card . Practice run I guess .

Pay it, because I wouldn't want my child to experience a negative reaction from the teacher over something that's really between the adults, and have a discussion with the school to learn why it happened(ie: do they think the child is going unfed, or coming to school under supplied, are they trying not to leave the child out in something the other kids are getting, was there an effort to let me know this was going on...I'd have a lot of questions), and discuss how I wanted things handled going forward.

My granddaughter has been crying in pain in her sleep and waking frequently since last week.
She sleeps in the room above me and a couple of nights my daughter and I have had to attend to her until nearly dawn before she finally settled. She has black rings under her eyes like a panda and is very unhappy at the moment.
The sleep disturbance seems to stem from belly pain and gas. A lot of the the times she's been crying, she's asleep, or barely awake, so there's not much we can do but keep responding to and checking on her.
She's not been eating much of the packed lunch I've been making for her and food has gone to waste. We have a pretty tight food budget and both my daughter and I go to some lengths to provide a healthy diet, avoiding the foods which cause her pain and all of us sleep deprivation.
My daughter and I have been trying to work out what we've been giving her that has made her unwell.
Today my daughter was billed for food she didn't know my granddaughter was being given by the school.

Think about what is better for the child's "selfsteem" and remember that the child is going to face the teacher the whole school year.
I would not fight my children’s teacher I would make them my allies, they are human after all and they do make mistakes too.

I make Ella's packed lunches, typically consisting of:
a wholewheat sandwich/wrap filled with veggie sausage, or veggie pate a portion of pasta a portion of fresh fruit, or raw vegetables a portion of dried fruit(s) a portion of potato, or wholegrain cereal crisps a portion of cheese, or yoghurt a bottle of water.
Does it sound like she's an unfed 4 year old, or has a poor diet?
The snack the school has given her consists of fresh fruit.

jac_the_gripper: This is not just about my grandchild.
Self-esteem is not of benefit to a dead child.
Nobody can afford to make this kind of mistake.
I feel it would be unconscionable conduct on my part not to ensure that procedures are reviewed and any necessary changes made.
The children have been fed fresh fruit at school??? When my children were little and I was working full time I did manage to prepare their food every day for the next day in school, so they would have only what I had prepared for them and so were instructed the teachers.
Your granddaughter has been having problems –for how many days ?- and you have not realized it could be school food? The fresh fruit??????

Then sue the school!
You are welcome by the way.
No, we did not realise my granddaughter's pain could have been school food because we were not informed she was being given these snacks, nor did we consent to it.
We were trying to work out what we had been giving her that was causing the problems. It's not a new routine for us - we have had these problems before.
We have found if we avoid certain foods she is pain free and can sleep. One of those food groups is fresh citrus fruit. I guess it might have been clementine week last week. It'll be interesting to see what she has been given over the weeks since she started school
What would the purpose of suing be from your perspective?
Personally, I'm not interested in money, but child protection as some foods can kill some children.
....there is a right way...and a wrong way ,in doing things.....if a school...wishes to feed your child......the parents should be informed.......first.....jmo.....just as a doctor would ask...before giving you a jab......common sence.

No. Of course she's not unfed.
I know that, that doesn't mean the school does.
Is her lunch making it to school? Is she eating it? Are the snacks before or after lunch? Are the other kids getting the snacks? Is it an activity, like snack time? Are the snack foods a favorite of the child's? Or is she wanting to participate? Is she claiming hunger for either of the previously mentioned reasons? Is she trading parts of her lunch away? Is she undereating in the morning or at lunch to save room for the snacks? Does the school realize you're not aware they're feeding her? Is that policy, or has there been a break down in communication?
I'd have questions.
Investigating the problem is the first step in addressing the problem.
Well, in this case you think it might be causing her harm,
so of course the first step is to tell them to stop.
There wasn't a food allergy question when she was enrolled?
I would think that would be a standard part of enrolling a child
