We all know the feeling...the bank statement arrives and we have a look down through it....when we went on that shopping trip last weekend we had spent a lot more than we thought! anyway, i am a firm believer that the modern way of paying for goods with 'cards' instead of having to hand over actual hard cash causes us to spend much more than we realise.......any thoughts on this subject?....

Yes, especially with contactless card payment and the way it's being advertised, appealing to the necessity of frivolousness.

I have a credit card for work travels, but I do find it handy sometimes otherwise. I know when I spend too much in the one month, I'll just have to take it easy the month after.

I learned the hard way back in 1994 - now I am just a pay as I go kinda gal.
It's always the way, you can pay now little ant or you can pay later, little grasshopper, it's a long a cold winter if you are the grasshopper.
On the other hand, I read on Facebook, a poster that said: you can always make more money, but you might not always be able make the memories later.

Not really, I'll occasionally(and knowingly)overspend for the sake of doing something, but not for having something.
And there are ways of immunising yourself from the frivolity of the modern day and these are called self-discipline and self-restraint.
I probably should have made it a bit clearer....i'm not talking about credit cards as such because i would not touch one of them with a barge pole....what i mean is the ordinary debit cards where the money goes directly out of our ordinary current accounts.......it's just that it seems a little less painfull using one than using real money.....credit cards are a complete disaster for a lot of people who cannot control their use with their huge interest rates etc.....jmo

My debit card is set up where it can be used as a credit card too but as I posted before I don't purchase anything if I don't have the cash in hand.

People have to learn to budget - it's a difference between treating yourself from time to time (or if there is a lot of month left at the end of money), but if it's something constant, people have to cop themselves on.

Me, I use a credit card, but pay it off when the bill comes in. Great way to not carry cash around in case of a robbery. And yes, if I spend a lot one month, I take a break the following month.
A debit card works if you have money in the bank, so one cannot overspend, unless you go over your normal budget. Of course the same applies: spend too much now, cool off next month.
The good think about either of these spending methods is that you can take advantage of some great bargains without having to run to the bank to get real cash.
