I often noticed in the Company I worked for that about 90% of the managers were men......that is still the case even today......any woman who went on to be in a management position was usually unmarried without children.....just wondering does it still happen that companies still choose men over women in order not to have to pay maternity leave or pay for substitutes while women are on leave?....

Businesses have to put the customer first, not its female employees who are mums. Smaller businesses especially need staff they can rely on. The bigger the firm, and the greater the role of the anonymous desk flesh, the more interchangeable and dispensable each staff member is and the more the firm can abide to equalism.
