When people ask Don McLean what does American Pie really mean, he likes to reply: "It means I never have to work again."

Who broke the church bells? Who was the jester who sang for the king and queen? And what really was revealed "the day the music died"?

The day the music died line refers to the death of Buddy Holly. I was told the King & Queen refer's to Elvis Presley & Connie Francis.

As for the rest... Hopefully the 16 manuscript up for auction today will reveal all..........

American Pie lyrics fetch more than £800,000 at auction

Handwritten lyrics to Don McLean’s 1971 hit American Pie have sold at auction for more than £800,000. The 16 pages, which include several drafts of the hit song which got to number two in 1972, sold at Christie’s in New York for 1.2 million US dollars (£805,574). The auction house described the song, which is around eight minutes long, as “alternately wistful, buoyant, and enigmatic”.

Its reference to “the day the music died” is about the deaths of rock ‘n’ roll pioneers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper in a 1959 air crash. American Pie made the charts again in 1991 when a re-issue got to number 12, before Madonna’s cover version finally topped the chart in 2000. McLean’s other hits include the 1972 chart-topper Vincent and Crying.

So the line 'The day the music died' was about the plane crash that killed JP, Riche & Buddy... The reference to the 'King & Queen' was about Elvis Presley & Connie Francis (from sources I've heard and reliable)...

Who was the 'jester'....

Ahhhh makes sense.. The jester is meant to be Bob Dylan...

"The Jester" is probably Bob Dylan. It refers to him wearing "A coat he borrowed from James Dean," and being "On the sidelines in a cast." Dylan wore a red jacket similar to James Dean's on the cover of The Freewheeling Bob Dylan, and got in a motorcycle accident in 1966 which put him out of service for most of that year."
