Many men seem to be able to do it all the time, in my experience anyway.
I think us women can get attached emotionally sooner than the guys do. But then, if you're sure that all you want is to date and aren't looking for anything serious, then I suppose it is possible to date without falling in love....at least for a certain amount of time because I think at some point or other one usually ends up wanting more.
