Because of work I had to go to another city in this state and passing by I did see a private kitchen for people in need, although there was a sign:

Not alcohol/drug addicts are allowed here.

What do you think about it?

What would you do to end hunger in your own community or your own country? (I have seen homeless even in Europe although not as many as in other countries).

Would you choose a sector of the population in need to offer them free meals?

If you were to run your own kitchen to help people in your own community how would you do it?

Thanks in advance and please feel free to comment to each other!

Homelessness in Ireland for example is characterized a lot by people with mental illness and various addictions. Not poverty in the general sense.

Not far from where I live there is a place run by the religious that gives out a dinner and maybe also a cup of tea for 1 Euro.

They must have food some days as if they didn't there would be no homeless. They would all die.

Cut immigration.
Bring back national service and the short, sharp shock.
Scrap the ASBO and bring back the riot van beating.

Bring back all the firm hand measures which used to prevent kids from humble backgrounds turning into dysfunctionals, and then stop giving away so many working class and entry-level jobs to foreigners. This would do most to prevent poverty and hunger in this country, the soup kitchens are a tragedy.

Prince Harry has just said the same, and has been ridiculed for doing so, but seems a good idea to me also.

Macroeconomics in a country is one thing and hunger from a “local” point of view is another issue.

I am not concerned about Central American, Cubans, Chinese, some European, etc... immigrants, it is about people in your very local community that are not doing well because a temporary situation (with the exception of some drug/alcohol addicts). Although, if any of them ask me for food I will give it to them.

Would any of you question the feeding of alcohol/drug addicts?
Could any of you just pass by and let them starve, anyway they are not going to overcome their addictions?
(please note that it is a question).

There is lots of wasted food at the supermarkets, restaurants, homes, etc...that could very well be “rescued” and used to prepare meals for many people. There are some food banks but they are not enough.

Assuming that you are concerned and want to do something about hunger in your community, what would you do?

There aren't many bums in my part of town. Sometimes, I see some hanging out in front of the supermarket, but none ever begged for food or money. This city within LA has a reputation for having better than average social services. They've adopted a rather progressive attitude regarding housing and assistance which, overall, costs less than what they do in the rest of the country and gets better results.

I don't really get how we can have a food surplus, but hungry people. Well.. I get it, but it's not okay on a humanitarian level.

I think many people are turned off from working with people on the street because they often do not react to help the same way a normal person reacts. You can hand someone a good meal and they'll shower you with obscenities. Many of them are genuinely mentally ill. Thanks to Reagan, they're out on the street rather than in an institution.

I don't mind volunteering to cook for needy people. I've volunteered to community service many times. In this country, anybody can become poor, homeless and hungry very quickly, so humility is a virtue.

As MD said, many of the homeless in Ireland are people with mental /addiction problems.
They were landed on the streets thanks to a governmental push towards so-called 'community care', AKA dumping them without supports into the community to fend for themselves.

There are many feeding centres in the major centres. Many run on a voluntary basis.

There are also changes being made on food going to waste. There are several groups now working with supermarkets and charities to ensure food is not wasted, but goes to feed people instead,

I haven't cooked for street kitchens as such but have given my time & labour to charity events such as " children in need" and other hospital charities and found it a very satisfying and rewarding experience .

While shopping in one of my local grocery stores I noticed a wagon type cart stacked full of fruit containers that was being thrown in the trash.I asked the store manage why couldn't they donate the fruit to a soup kitchen and was told that they weren't allowed to.

AS much as I'd love to do so I couldn't turn my kitchen into a soup kitchen even if I wanted to.

easiest ways to stop hunger in the usa- tell repub talk show idiots that food stamps are necessary.........and have a food price freeze.....americans are tired of wealthy supermarket owners and stock holders charging too much for mediocre food.....

Hi,
that's actually a very big problem.
I worked in US for Early Head Start and we were helping people to get very cheap food (like from churches, or 1$ bag, or…
Had clients who called me that they have no food for the week.

But also here in EU there is a lot of hidden poverty. And I am not talking about homeless people. I am talking about kids who sometimes have their own warm meal at school. If they have.
I still remember the kids who knocked to my door asking for money. I did not have any cash but I just baked something. They looked so happy eating. They took all other stuff the stuff like rice, oil, wheat, … I offered them. I told them to come another day and they never did (or maybe we did not coincide?) and few months later I moved out from this town.
3 Kids, all first years of primary school.

How many kids like that are there? Those who are too ashamed or too scared to ask?

I've been thinking about this since I was worked as part timer in restaurant before. I know that sometime restaurant just throw their rest. If it's possible to make an arrangement with them that you want to buy or if it's even better to get it for free, so that you can give to people in needs. I mean, the rest from restaurant usually still in a good quality. I wish that this kind of food still ethically, morally, whatever appropriate to eat.

Part of the issue is food safety laws.

Food safety laws are there for a reason and are very sensible. A food item contaminated with one E-coli organism and kept at an incorrect temperature could contain enough organisms within 10 minutes to kill, or permenantly disable.

The issue with waste food from supermarkets, or other food outlets is not necessaily that the food is not fit to eat at the time it's thrown away, but that it can't transported and processed under the food safety regulations easily. You can't just take a whole load of sandwiches to a homeless shelter without risking already vulnerable people's lives - the food would need to be transported and stored correctly. Mostly the resources and facilities to do this do not exist.
