WithRegardTo "synæsthesia"

I've been a music teacher/instructor for many years. With all my younger(& some older ones, too) violin/fiddle students, I put into practise something my late-father used to with us(me & my siblings; and, of course, all his younger students).

When teaching about the four strings(E, A, D & G -- all different frequencies with "A" being "A440"), I ask the student, "What colour does this one sound like?". Invariably, the parent(who also sits in on the lessons until the student is ready to "kick 'em out and go solo[pun intended]" on his/her lesson with me), gives me the strangest look(perhaps wondering if they've just hired some lunatic savant to teach their child, lol). Sometymes the child does, too. After I explain, the parent is often still mystified; but oddly enough, the student "gets it" and we carry on.

The interesting thing is not so much that a child understands{I firmly believe children are capable of so many "incredible" things. It's just unfortunate that we(Society) teach/knock it out of them. Howsomever...}, it's more that the child, my student, hears the same colours I did at around the same age[betwixt 3 to 7 yrs of age]. It's happened too frequently for me to consider it to be mere freak coincidence.

Also noteworthy is the fact that boys(like my brother, too), generally choose/cite darker shades than their female counterparts[e.g. where a girl chooses yellow, a boy chooses orange].

My questions to you, Innocentia00122(or anyone else seriously into this forum/post) are:

1) "Is this the product of alternate neurological 'wiring'?"

2) "Is it something with which we are all born and eventually 'outgrow'(or have 'taught out of us' by Society)?"

3) "Is it therefore something adult synæsthetes can also/be able to/learn to overcome(should they so require or desire)?"

Inquiring mimes want to know. "Our-feet-are-stained!" [Aufweidersein!] ??~=)kd wave

Hallo und guten Tag, liebe KarcsiDemi wave
thank you, I am fine, and thank you very much for your kindness to write some german words. This is really very nice!

Maybe I answer first your questions.
1. Yes, synesthesia is a product of neurological wiring.
And as I experience it all my life, synesthesia goes only always one way. If one part of the brain gets a stimulus another part is working instantly, too. If I hear a sound, I see a colour. But if I see a colour it doesn´t remind me of the sound or I hear the sound.

2. As far as I know we are all born as synesthetes, but about at the age of 3 months some connections get mostly disconnected (see also synaptic pruning).
I don´t think synesthesia is something that can be taught out of someone. It is impossible because it is the way you see the world. And because of the synesthesia you do things in a certain way like maths or remembering things. Of course it is possible to not talk about it, but it is not possible to not have it any more. I can´t imagine how it is to see numbers or letters not in colours or to simply listen to music without all the colours and shapes in my mind´s eye. I am not able to imagine this.

3. No. Synesthesia is nothing to overcome. If you are a synesthete then this question is comparable with that if you would ask if hunger or any other existential need should be overcome because it is something you can´t change. :-) I am sure, every synesthete will say that synesthesia is nothing bad, but good and helpful and natural (in most cases - I have no idea how synesthetes think who tastes things when they hear or see things). I would not want to overcome the synesthesia because it is a part of my life since I can think. It is a part of me and also nothing that I can influence. So it doesn´t matter if you are a child or an adult with synesthesia.

It is very interesting what you wrote about the children who you teach and that the girls connect lighter colours with tones and the boys darker. But I can not explain that to myself unfortunately because I feel the synesthesia as such an individual thing and the form not dependent on gender. But that´s my bad :-)
You said that you connected at a certain age certain colours with sounds, and that these colours were the same that these children connected with the same sounds.
When you are a synesthete you see all your life the exactly same colour (when you have this kind of synesthesia), in exactly the same nuance, when you hear a certain sound. It does never change, no matter how old you are.
