A recent report shows that the Irish language is in decline in the Gaeltacht. Especially among young people. English is the dominant language of the internet, facebook, commerce and music. So this is to be expected. Is there any way this decline can be halted? slán agus beannacht.

I love Irish and try to speak a little when ever i can,
i have forgotten a lot of it, tá mé ag foghlaim aris é,fuair mé
breantanas ón mo drefuair cúpla leabhar i gaelga, agus bhi an athas orm

I think if people just spoke, cupla focail gach lá it might help to
re introduce it in places it is never used.

yes I agree with you. I would like to see government taking a more active approach. It is difficult. But it is worth it. Is é mo thuraim.

'A more active approach'? You mean waste even more money? The language is on life-support, which should have been turned off long ago.

not to me it is'nt. Whenever I go to Lidl or Aldi I see and hear lots of Eastern europeans speaking their languages. At work I see and hear Africans speaking a foreign tongue also. So what is wrong with using an teanga Gaeilge? The Irish language.

sad news alright but not surprising. it was badly approached in our schooling system though, forcing it on us. i wasnt a big fan of it as im dyslexic but its a major part of our culture. i hope it survives.

Exactly, speaking their own language, just as we speak our own language, which is English.

The Eastern europeans and Africans can speak English also. In effect they are bi lingual, can speak more than one language. What is wrong with that?

Hi
I would take some encouragement from the numbers of children attending Gàel scoileanna ... I think the future is bring and more so with the additional growth in Meanscoileanna. Irish is a strong language abroad but i believe the numbers are not in alot of the Gaeltachts to ensure the growth of the language outside of education. Public services are committing to some new strategies so there is still hope

There are lots of places to learn Irish from scratch, or as a false-beginner.

Nothing wrong with it at all, it's good. But Irish will always be a tiny minority interest.

the challenge for Gaeilgoiri will be to make this tiny majority a bit bigger.
