Hi there. I am looking for some sound advice, information, suggestions and possible future friendship when I eventually do arrive in Crete. I have been doing my homework but would value input from expats from anywhere now living in Crete. Good or bad warts and all if you like. I am sort of an Aussie but originally UK born. Come on people Talk to Me..........Cheers.

I've lived in Crete for 7 years. Why are you moving here? Where in Crete?
Do you speak Greek? I'm willing to share all I know if you get in touch.

Hi
I live in Crete near Chania.

Things to know and watch out for.
They drive like idiots all the time. They use hazard lights to indicate, Im stopping now as I am going to (A) talk to my friend. (B) Im just stopping. (C) Im turning left or Right (D) I've forgotten to turn them off. Mobile phone is permanently stuck to side of head. Traffic lights are usually ignored by moped riders. They drive in the middle of the road. Average speed is around 20kph and any corner is taken as a series of straight lines, depending on if there is oncoming traffic.
Roads are in disrepair and if its wet, Don't drive through standing water as you may drive into a large deep hole.
Older Greeks never took a driving test, MOT certificate is hit and miss along with insurance, So take out fully comp with the extra for uninsured collision.

Inter American does good insurance for homes and vehicles.

Doctors surgeries are walk in and a fee is paid most times, If you need a prescription its 5 euros then you pay whatever the cost of that particular medicine is at chemist. Chemists are brilliant here.

Shops are closed on Sundays. Greeks shout when they talk as that's how they do it. Children are well behaved.

Restaurants are pretty decent and prices are not high. Meat is usually fresh and in season. Vegetable's and fruit is usually local and seasonal, Expect to see marks or blemishes but don't be put off.

Supermarkets can be hit and miss, Most things are imported from mainland. So you either have lots of variety of everything or items you had last week are not available. Holiday season can empty a supermarket quickly.

Local shops are pretty good though also limited, Bread is rubbish, So bake your own if you can.

Out of towns the internet is slow, Expect at best 8mb even if your paying for 20mb. Mobile coverage isn't brilliant away from towns.

Houses are cheap out of town, rentals are also cheap. Compared to UK prices and exchange rate.

People are very friendly, Polite unless they are driving like idiots ;o) people who live near you will share veg and fruits with you, just because they grow them and feel you will need them.

Weather is brilliant, Its warm during the winter unless your up in mountains in which case its freezing and you get snow on the ground like this year. It rains a lot in winter ie October to March/April then it's hot and sunny, Night time temps can reach 36c daytime 38c.
We get spectacular thunder storms here as well.

Plenty of empty beaches to swim from, water is clean and clear and warm in summer.

Smoking is banned in public offices and bars tavernas etc, but that's ignored universally from my experience.

Think that's about it,
You will enjoy the island as it is very beautiful

So you wanted to bring, your rules, regulations and behavior
to Greece, from the country you are coming from.
I wonder,as why you didn't stay there.
So you are an ""idiot"" settling in,among idiots.

A troll is you.
And YES i've read your post, and found unacceptable your coment
calling us Greeks idiots.-
So by calling ""idiots"" the Greeks, you made a contribution.??
Typical in the MED.- They retire, settle in a MED country, never
affiliate with the locals, never learn the language, and complain
most of the time,by making comparison, how things run, between
their country of origin and Greece.-
thumbs down thumbs down thumbs down

Its not a good idea, you can get Sun, Sea and everything else in Spain or Portugal, apartments from 150 euros per month, villas from 350, food is cheaper too, things will get harder in Greece. If you are buying a property then near to Granada you can pick up town houses for 10,000€ spend, in Greece unless you are good with the language you will be stuck, if l can help message me.

Look on You Tube and see a couple of very nice films by the Crete Tourism council, well made and informative.

I'm going to Cape Verde this November for the third time... But, perhaps, it's time to consider Portugal? And learn some Portuguese? :)

150 Euro per month... though you have to eat...

You are writing about many countries, Italy, Spain, Portugal etc are the same, you missed out a couple of things that are: All foreigners have the wrong colour skin, they all talk a different language and are all Millionaires and this last important thing gives them all a licence to steal from us.(Don't bet me that l am not correct).

Isn't that there right to steal from us?? We arrive as a strain of migratory ants, don't wanting to integrate and living the same luxury and comfort for a very reduced price while having a lot of money!! It look as a new colonization. British, German and Dutch people are the worst to handle with, always wanting to haggling and trying to control the native people. The natives don't accept this arrogancy anymore and want to be respected. We must realise that for once and ever.
