MarsMan: I am not expecting a full song and dance routine, or fire works, but some of them won't even say "thank you," they just stand there expecting people to donate, and if you don't they give you some nasty looks.
I guess the real problem I have is that I have no idea where the money goes with these clubs at all, or what they are spending it on, for all I know it is going to the club bar to subsidies the booze for their members. So a little more info on where the money is going wouldn't go a miss.

Yes, tranparency and accountability needs to be addressed. This needs expertise which is not free either.

How about a couple of posters printed up, using a home computer, put up outside telling people a collection is going on, what for, and what the money will be spent on, most just have a bucket at the end of the till with a club name on, and no info at all about how the cash will be spent.

In my experience that is generally the case. My issue is with the amount collected and how it is spent.

it probably would help the whole industry if transparency was the way. we may see this slowly happen in order to get it all back on track but i know plenty that have and still do these charities etc. most is well spent. chap was just in my house yesterday that just got a really good job in a local youth club. hes cleaning up at 14 euro an hour 14 hours a week. be aware hes 40 odd with a mortgage. hes deleighted though and im delighted for him. best man for the job. some amazing people working in this field.

Unfortunately we get the politicians we elect, after the last election, with all the grandiose promises made, I posted a comment here, "let the excuses begin," and I was slagged off by some people for it, I doubt they would be so ready to slag me off now. NEVER EVER trust someone who offers you the Earth, because it isn't theirs to give, and that goes for every politician regardless of political party. I vote based on the premise of who I think will do the least damage, rather than the best job.

For years charities have not prepared accounts. The fact that this may cost them money is hardly an excuse not to prepare accounts as they don't mind paying the expense of their employees.

Where money is given to open boxes and people don't explain where money goes is a recipe for fraud.

A lot of charities which are supposed to help vulnerable people or animals are un-contactable after 5.00pm. They exist for their directors and employees. Vulnerable people and animals don't stop being vulnerable after office hours.

The % of money collected by charities that goes on admin. is ridiculous.

I had a woman call to my door collecting for her son's local GAA club. The GAA gets lots of grants and if you want your son to play a sport buy a jersey etc. instead of the latest gadget for your son and expect other people to pay for his jersey.

Charity collectors get commission and often don't care whether the person they are putting pressure on to give money can afford it or not. They are sales people for a business who pays it's employees first before giving any money to the cause they supposedly support. People have been pressurised in to signing up for standing orders without consideration of whether they can afford it or not.

Giving money to open buckets should be discouraged, you can't trust charities, you can't trust priests, you can't trust politicians. Trust no-one. They are all out to get your money.

You can however trust me. Please donate money for my goldfish's retirement fund to Sort Code 35-89-20, Account no. 21654903. It's a very worthy cause.

mjpd67: What do people think of these charity collections ?

Sure they are gran, I give when I want to and can and I don't give to those I don't want to or when I need a collection myself.

I'm currently sticking a page on a bucket and making an ID badge for collecting in Galway when I'm there, I hear the drink is expensive wine

Isn't the weather beautiful grin cool
