I'm from Ohio and I have heard many humorous Southern sayings since moving to South Carolina.
Bless her heart. (Depending on the tone can mean sympathy/concern or "she is an idiot.") If the good Lord willing and the creek don't rise... (if nothing bad happens.) She fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. (very ugly) Barking up the wrong tree. (you are wrong) Full as a tick. Fit to bust. (ate too much) Caught with your pants down. (surprised and unprepared) Cut the light on/off. (turn the light on/off) Don't bite off more than you can chew. (attempt what you can accomplish) Don't count your chickens before they hatch. (first know the results) Don't let the tail wag the dog. (the chief is in charge, not the Indians) Either fish or cut bait. (work or make way for those who will) Fly off the handle. (angry and lashing out) Get the short end of the stick. (not invited and treated wrong) Go hog wild. (have a good time) Go off half-cocked. (have only half the facts) Go whole hog. (go for it all) Got your feathers ruffled. (upset and pouting) AIM TO- plan to do CARRY ON- to carry on foolishness DIRECTLY- in a little while, or a couple of weeks FALLING OUT- disagreement FIXING TO- about to HEY- hello HOLD YOUR HORSES- (be patient) LAID UP- ill, hurt, unable to work MESS-one who carries on, "He's a mess." SORRY- inferior quality, worthless, and lazy YA'LL or Y'ALL (can be spelled both ways)- you all, two or more people
