In America there is no mention of Halloween until the early 19th century following mass trans Atlantic emigration by over 2 million Irish escaping the Great Famine from 1845-1849. With them, the Irish brought Halloween and other age old customs. By the early 20th century, America began to commercialise Halloween with postcards, figurines and later masks and costumes, transforming the festival into one of the most profitable times of year for retailers. Indeed America has had such an impact on Halloween that many people believe it is an American invention, rather than an ancient Irish Tradition.

Halloween has arrived here in the Southern Hemisphere (Australia).

I always remember the occasion when my late Mother opened the door to young Trick or Treaters one evening. They all voiced "Trick or Treat ?". My Mum thought for a moment and excitedly said "I'll have the treat please!". The rest of the family thought it hilarious, and the callers had to explain the concept of Trick and Treating to her. She soon got around to giving them some little treats and so they happily went on their way.

On a sad note, that was the last Halloween my Mum was to spend at home. It wasn't too long afterwards when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and her condition eventually deteriorated to the point where she required specialised Nursing care....
