Start remembering your “bags for life” - because from next week you’ll have to cough up 5p for each single-use plastic bag.

The charge is being introduced by major retailers - including all supermarkets - across the UK on Monday, October 5, in a bid to reduce litter and protect wildlife.
More than 7 billion of the bags are handed out each year.

But the Government wants to slash that figure by 80% by getting more people to use the longer-lasting “bags for life.”

They think it will save £60 million per year in litter clean-up costs, and generate £730 million for good causes.

Here’s what you need to know about the new fee:
1. What’s happening?

The Government has introduced a law requiring all supermarkets and large stores to charge a minimum of 5p for every single-use plastic carrier bag they hand out in a bid to reduce their use and the litter they cause.

Good scheme on the surface but who des which good causes benefit.

I must admit, USA is more ahead regarding this issue,, they use paper bags almost everywhere,,while in France,,

The French government wants to ban single-use plastic bags by 2016, years ahead of a European directive. But replacing them with biodegradable packaging makes it equally problematic.

The surprising amendment was adopted on 25 June by the French parliament and aims to ban plastic bags by 2016. In its attempt to reduce the plastic bags’ negative environmental impact, France is pushing through a law that is more ambitious than European Union efforts.

This should be a worldwide pratice, for pollution knows no borders,,

We've had it for 14 years.

The levy per bag here is 22c

5p isn't enough of a levy.

It made a huge difference to the amount of plastic around the place. Best thing that ever came in.

Ban them outright ,one of my sons farms next to a major dump , the dump has fulltime staff collecting windblown bags , high netting fences built to catch plastic just slows the spread .

Very few people buy them now. And it's nearly always men. I always notice that if I'm in the queue.
I would like them banned too. But I guess anything that is money for the government, so they will keep them there.
But the levy has definitely helped.

We see it some here, but it's almost completely limited(in Michigan) to the upscale groceries, and is widely viewed as odd-extreme PC-hippy-ish behavior.
