My Grandad, both actually, took part so I would have to say yes. Pity about the casualities though especially the children killed.
Would we the Southern Irish have gotten independence anyway? I personally don't think the heavily armed Southern Unionists would have given it without a hell of a fight. Also returning British army soldiers I don't think would have supported the Independence movement also- they had just fought for the Empire after all.

For the first 40 years of Independence Ireland was very badly run, dominated by the Catholic Church and the economic illiteracy of Eamon De Valera.

I think Independence would have come about eventually with Home Rule been firstly implemented and I reckon Ireland would have secured Independence post World War 2 as Britain was bankrupt.

I agree. I don't think we would have had to wait til WW2 to secure independence though.

Perhaps Independence would have been secured in the 1930's at the earliest.

The Civil War was utterly pointless and set the country back years.

you could say Ireland would be much better off financially had we remained part of the union but that would be the only reason why Ireland would want to remain part of the Uk..There is a price to pay for freedom..I don't think Ireland is capable of managing its own affairs..sad to say..you see the mess this country is inireland

jt972: You know what they say about common sense..
It ain't common at all as these forums demonstrate

Keep the faith Jt, there is a lot of people on this site who know the difference between common sense and common purpose.

But for reasons that defeat me at present, people think "common purpose" and drink tap water...

Seeing it's a Free Country ?.

My Feelings,IRELAND since the beginning of time has been divided and conquered and then shared out like a carved up Turkey.

This happened again in 1916 in the Republic, the Fianna took control and ruled ever since right up until this present day.

The consequences for the ordinary Irish person in large numbers has been state controlled repression and control leading to mass emigration and on going Church Control leading further to the disastrous consequences and inequality for the people in the Republic of Ireland ever since.

The Fianna have disgraced the men of 1916 ever since the formation of the State because of there greed and corruption and under handed brown paper bag dealings.

Likewise in the North now abandoned on the most part by the Republican Goverment the Unionist did the same to the people there and controlled them through there Churches and power structures, with even more disastrous consequences that caused the War/Troubles.

Those who where given a chance messed up it's time for new politics in Ireland,we need Politicians in Ireland right across this Island who care firstly for the people, the Irish people North and South.

The blame for all that has gone wrong since 1916 lies at the hands of firstly all the Churches in Ireland and then the Fianna and the Unionist who abused most of us in Ireland, some don't even know they where abused ask yourself this question though as it does effect all of us,why did your Family member's have to leave Ireland.

My Heart lies with the I.R.B. and my Christian beliefs which are simple are personal and belong to me, and no Church.

kennyfromdublin: I'd hardly describe England as a well run country, they have far bigger social problems than in Ireland.

Far Bigger Population = Far bigger Social problems ireland
