With halloween approaching, does anyone think that people have taken
these occasions too far? also Christmas, the excess and waste is worrying, people spending money that clearly they cannot afford, and sometimes borrow so that they can what?? keep up with others? make sure that their children have the latest gadgets, latest costumes, and all the other rubbish that they consume, have consumers been brainwashed, and is it now time to instill some values for the future on children, re- good management of money.

I agree that Halloween has become overly commercial and children should be encouraged to make their own costumes and decorations instead.

Saying that, I enjoy the festivities and will be waiting at the door with my mask on, and nuts in my hand ready to greet the kids. innocent

Lol, Yeah I dislike the shops selling all the costumes and kids feeling they have to have a more expensive hand made creation, along with parents getting caught up in the competition and going crazy decorating their windows and houses.

Whats wrong with cutting up and dyeing an old bedsheet to make a costume, and making a mask from papier mache, ducking for coins and fruit etc.

Samhain is an ancient Irish festival and we should take it back from hollywood.

I couldn't agree more, a nice little job for someone local that is gifted with making just as nice ,if not nicer creations at half the cost , that's just another idea, but as you said, the most effective, could be from torn bed sheets, and the like, ,why line the pockets of the already rich!!

Derry is the best place to be in the world on Halloween according to a recent pole, no room in the inn here and fantastic for the City and the visitors, great buzz about town.

In answer to your post, no I don't think people have gone mad over it nor do I think they are brainwashed, and we are installing values of fun and adventure and dressing up and passing on old stories and keeping the fun of Halloween going with children and adults alike, a chance to get back into your childhood again. coffee2 jackolantern

I think that there are lots of ways to have fun and still not have to put people under pressure for the cash, its just like first communion, the expense that goes into that these days, could go towards their education, i'm all for them having fun, but not at any cost.

I don't get the sense of pressure for people to spend large amounts of money.
Dressing up can be free and for those who choose not to or can't afford to buy costume's would choose that option.
The only cost is trick or treating treats to have in and that has always been the case, the rest is optional.
Up here it is a big event in the City with so many free activities over the festival for kids.
My daughter has went around the house gathered clothes from everywhere, even my good blouse mumbling laugh and has it all in a bag all week to have it wrinkled, god know's what she is or will look like but she will have fun, I will throw on one of the costumes at hand, might be a soldier grin jackolantern jackolantern jackolantern
