in Flanders Fields

John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

A tricky situation. Republic is a "neutral" country. So we in my opinion should'nt take sides. The poppy is worn in N.I quite a bit mainly by Unionists. There is no law stopping people wearing it.
But the British Army is a controversial subject in this part of Ireland. It is not our Army now.

Do the Americans wear poppies? I don't think so. If you ask me, ok we have our Oglaigh na hEireann (Irish army), but we are closer to the US Army than the British army.
Far more people in this country would support the US army and Irish American soldiers than British Army regiments. So no poppy.

snowlynx: I'm sure there's a whole list of people who would gladly put a bullet in you.
I could name loads of incidents where young men in the British Army were murdered by terrorists in NI.

Poppy shouldn't be compulsory, I don't like the way it's going in England with people being abused for not wearing one, like James McClean who quite politely explained his reasons for not wearing one. It was never meant to be like that.

" and you dare to call me a terrorist while you look down your gun"

Have a listen to the guest on the last word
Today, very British, he explains why he sees
The wearing of the poppy as a farce, his father
Fought the Irish in the Easter rising

He thinks the wearing of it is an insult to the
War dead

Let those disgusting war memories die instead
Of harassing everyone to glorify them, maybe
The British should be a lot more humble like we
Are with the wearing of the Easter lily, an emblem
Truly to be proud of

No, I've tried to oppose terrorism at every opportunity. That's why I condemn the provo sectarian murder campaign, the Loyalist murder campaign and the british army if they break the law.

Speaking of Irish women where would they go for their abortions seeing as we won't grow up and deal with the problem here, once again Britain dealing with the overflow of our problems.

You're being selective as usual. Why don't you mention the soldiers who were murdered by these cowards shooting at them from long distances, or planting bombs by the side of the road then running away as fast as they can so that they were miles away when the bombs went off?
Cowards who fought a cowardly war. At least the men of 1916 stood toe to toe with the brits and fought like men in an honourable way.
