Nov 15, 2015 8:12 AM CST Tips on how the non-Irish can pronounce Irish names
It seems the non-Irish are having a tough time lately getting gaelic names right. So I thought I'd be helpful, if I could! grin

Some Girls Names:

Aoife pronounced ee fa

Caoimhe pronounced kwee va (not keeva)

Saoirse pronounced seersha

Gráinne pronounced graw-in-ya - gaelic for Grace (we call it a fada, similar to French accent)

Áine is Grainne without the gr (gaelic for Ann)

Róisin pronounced roh sheen

Gearóidín pronounced gar oh deen (gaelic for Geraldine)

Some Boys Names:

Tadhg (gaelic for Tim) pronounced thigh-g

Eoghan pronounced oh-in

Séamus pronounced shay mus (gaelic for James)

Cathal pronounced cau (as in caught) hal - gaelic for Charles

Seoirse pronounced shore sha (gaelic for George)

Oisin pronounced oh sheen

Diarmuid pronounced deer mwid (gaelic for Dermot)

Good luck! laugh

You'd think Laoise was Irish for Lisa, but I just saw this:

not if you follow the phonetics; and if you know people with those names they can help you. It's no more confusing than any names native to other countries. It's just nice to make an effort to get the names right when you come across them. grin wave

My Grandfather was Irish, and I was around my grandparents a lot in my youth.
Lola, was my grandmother's name and I never heard grandpa say her name correctly. He would always call her, Lolr. That's right, Lola with an 'r', instead of an 'a' on the end. Lolr.

was your grandfather living in England at some stage? The English do that, they pronounce an a like an r. Sheila would be Sheiler. More down south England though I think. He might have picked that up from the English.:)

So if a child is called Wiseman when he's born and turns out not to be so wise, what then?
Or Patience and they're very impatient! laugh
All very complimentary and sweet of course.

We like our names! grin
