The University of Ottawa in Canada has abruptly canceled the free yoga classes it has offered to students since 2008 over concerns that they amounted to “cultural appropriation” and were connected to “cultural genocide.” Jennifer Scharf, the practitioner who had offered the classes, told the Independent that she had suddenly received a message telling her that they’d be suspended because “there were some issues in terms of a formal complaint.”

The decision to cancel the classes was made by the Ottawa Student Federation, the university’s independent student body. According to the Ottawa Sun, staff at the Centre for Students with Disabilities sent out an e-mail claiming that “while yoga is a really great idea and accessible and great for students . . . there are cultural issues of implication involved in the practice.”

”Yoga has been under a lot of controversy lately due to how it is being practiced,” and which cultures those practices “are being taken from,” the e-mail continued. ADVERTISING According to the centre, many of those cultures “have experienced oppression, cultural genocide and diasporas due to colonialism and western supremacy . . . we need to be mindful of this and how we express ourselves while practicing yoga.”

The Sun reports that about 60 people had participated in the program, and Scharf said she thinks it’s ridiculous and sad that they won’t be able to do so anymore. “There’s a real divide between reasonable people and those people just looking to jump on a bandwagon,” she said. “And unfortunately, it ends up with good people getting punished for doing good things.”

It seems like there are far too many people who are spending far too much time focusing on how to pick apart the good things and yet ignore the things that truly needs changing. doh

The meaning of yoga is to join, union, unite, but can also mean to subjugate. It can also be a way of gaining control over the mind, perhaps the powers that be wouldn't want us to do that...laugh

Yes, do it every day. But yoga is much more than just stretching, it can be stillness of the mind and body, Raja Yoga is one of many yoga practices to go within.

"Raja Yoga, sometimes called the "Royal Yoga" is inclusive of all yogas, and its philosophy goes beyond the boundaries of the many styles of yoga today. Raja Yoga emphasizes the benefits of meditation for spiritual self-realization and the purposeful evolution of consciousness."

wave Kaybee

..............blushing

i feel embarassed as a canadian....sheeesh

and yes....i do practice yoga almost daily, for both body strength and looking within. tryin' to get to empty so things flow.

hold a pose and pay attention to one's breath...or on more 'difficult' days, use a youtube guided meditation. it's actually a great way to get the ego-spinning to stop. my body gets healthier, and my mind gets calm.

Bingo.

We can't change history, we shouldn't be held hostage by history.

Seems all the rage now, to be offended.
