Horses for courses, Paris Dakar have to be 4 stroke. Short course, jumps etc., have to be 2 stroke. I've only ever had 2 strokes, mostly Suzukis and a few Yamahas. I had a go on a mates CRF and it kind of scared me...

Yes, Suzuki driver here too, DR series, from the 500 to the 800 big, I had them all (current one the 650).
Would not be able to take these bikes on proper dirt though. I did some dirt with my 80cc back then, but after that only very very light dust, else road.
I am not tall and I completely lack physical strength. I could not even hold a 2 stroke on truly rough ground, let alone a 4 stroke
but all the best to you, 2 strokes sure are fun
