headghasket42: how many people are totally different and outgoing online, but shy and introverted in real life? i used to be bold and outgoing/sociable, but as the years have passed, i'm finding myself even more shy and have a hard time meeting people (to me, people seem more unapproachable now), just talking friendship really; let alone dating.

thought i'd ask others here. any and all comments appreciated :)

I don't know about shy, but I find it difficult to talk for long with strangers, I start feeling bored and trapped. If I've chatted to them first online its completely different, we've established a rapport. cheers

I hate talking to strangers, or anybody else for that matter laugh

I would be a reserved friendly introvert with notions of being extroverted which I can never quite pull off grin

I'm glad you enjoyed it, he said, running a gnarly shovel-sized hand through his greasy mullet.

jac_the_gripper: I'm so painfully shy I annoy myself.

And yet I have an inner confidence that may very sociable people don't seem to have.

I'm very much an introvert, which means I have a lot going on inside my head and I don't need a huge amount of external stimuli to get the cogs and wheels whirring around.

At work, no one would know I'm shy. I play my part well attending to the practical and social needs of others...but in my own time I'm pretty much a lone wolf.

Shyness, sociability, introvertness, extrovertness and confidence are often more complex and individual than depicted in popular belief.

I like internet communication because I don't have any difficulty hearing people, I have time to think about my measured replies and I can choose my interactions.

Ah, I see. So you'd prefer to date a guy who has no hands at all. Sitting there at the dinner table, spooning mush into his drooling mouth and then holding a harmonica for him as he tries to play it, covering everything in drool and phlegm.

Good thread...Online we can talk to anyone without fear of saying the wrong thing and getting embarrassed, but face to face is a different matter...I'm a bit of a loner and maybe it's, because I have a problem interacting with people? I work in a shop and fine with people in that environment, but don't really make friends very often, so it can be lonely at times...It takes a lot for me to trust people and that's, because I was let down in the past

You're not alone. After retiring, I had to "shake off" the hospitilitis --all the nursie-nursie-doctorie-doctorie-stuff, and that had been my world for three decades, so it was a bit of a job. Now, I embrace simplicity, and find that I am starting to be less and less willing to discuss my college and career background. Overall, I am not one to do a whole lot of interacting with people, and often when I do, I'm disappointed or frustrated, or both. I have found very good value in solitude, actually. handshake
