I'm sometimes invited to teach at middle schools here in China, it always raises a smile when, as I write a (slightly hard) sentence on the board, I hear a ten year old girl utter "Ohhh myyyy Gooodddd" in a perfect californian accent lol

Perhaps you fail to understand that the word "god" does not necessarily have to refer to your idea of a Christian god, many countries have used the word God to describe a deity, or a spirit or even a worshipped ancestor.
