French supermarkets will be banned from throwing away or destroying unsold food and must instead donate it to charities or allow it to be turned into animal food or compost.

Should all countries do this?

I agree tru it could be distributed through the food banks that are still busy in the UK. Also the charitable institutions for the home less could give a few people some nourishment. JMO

Its a double edged sword. Nobody wants to waste food, but if you give it to the unwashed masses they'll simply wait at the exact spot for the next handout. And be very antisocial if its not to their liking or a bit late.

There speaks a true humanitarian, I hope you never need a helping hand sometime, may you reap what you sow.

I've seen our grocery store clerks look at the expiration date of perishable and canned food on the shelves and asked if they were going to give it to the homeless and was told they weren't for fear of contamination. I myself use expiration dates as a guideline. If food in my refrigerator or in the pantry is three days past the expiration date I won't eat it. Basically, in stores it depends on what the food is. If it's dairy it should be thrown in the garbage. Stores have premade sandwiches that might be one day past the expiration date. I think they should be given to the homeless or a family who can't afford to buy food.

Indeed what I sew. Getting as much work as I can, paying my own way, helping others where I can.

Problem is, most people who could use a helping hand are not in the habit of asking for it. Most who ask for it are not really in need of it.

Many people may not like to believe this but it is very true for a very large percent of the homeless out there on the street. It also goes for money handouts and in the case of the State that I live in it is getting to the point that people are coming here simply because there are so many that want to support them being homeless. In fact if you are on the edge of possibly making your way or becoming homeless they will even help you lose what you have left and then let you set up a tent in the park and teach you how to live on a heavy schedule of going from one place to the next to get "assistance" instead of possibly helping that person or family to keep their home and become self-sufficient. But as I mentioned, if you dare point this out you become a heartless person... (so they say). I do not think it is bad to help others, I do think it is better to help them to learn to help themselves.

3 days? fair enough. But I've got some Mexican mol verde sauce thats 7 years out of date and I'll still have a crack at it. If I die, too bad so sad. But I bet I dont.

Well I don't know about Oz, it seems to have left you somewhat cynical.

In England we also have food banks where you can be referred by a doctor or minister to get free rations enough for two days at a time, but you can go back again, people including families and children do not have to go hungry.

Yes Tom, I live in a area infested by parasites that just couldnt be bothered. And they aggressively compete with people in genuine need, but thats another story

Tru, they've started a thing here, where ugly fruit and veg is discounted. I hope it takes off, it will help those in genuine need. But the grubs will take advantage however they can, within weeks they'll have worked a way around it or got the Government to pay for it.

YES! The US wastes so much. It is especially bad in any kind of restaurant and fast food establishment. I work part time in one and a lot is cooked up in advance and kept warm for a while to be ready to serve on short notice. By a certain time, if it all hasn't sold, it is thrown out. This costs the parent company money and I really don't understand how they dont squawk at the (lost) expense. There is a hunger and food insecurity problem in the small town where I live. Now multiply this many times over, especially in large cities. Even animal shelters can use cooked and warmed over hamburgers.

I wouldn't want to eat most of the crap I see in supermarkets or prepared in restaurants, so why would I assume even the more hungry would consume it? confused

Well you make it sound like Oz is infested with parasites eager to take the food out of the mouths of the true needy.

I like Oz and most of the Ozzites on here,

Where is your evidence of this outrageous accusation??????

I cant think of any publications that would be brave enough to name the problem... Maybe try lonely planet, but they'll be more focussed on where backpackers can get a free feed or get laid. Maybe have a look at Cairns.com.au every so often and work out the the problem for yourself...
