MUSIC is HEALTH It is never too late to learn to play an instrument. In fact, playing music has plenty of benefits, especially for the elderly. To begin with, playing instruments improves cognitive performance. The researches show that after only 4-5 months of playing a musical instrument for an hour a week, people over 65 reported improvements of their hearing, memory and control over the hands.
Adults and children can both benefit from learning to play an instrument. It helps sharpen the memory, and also makes it easier for the brain to learn foreign languages. Learning tones and scores increases the ability to store audio information, which also makes you more perceptive to interpreting the emotions of others. While playing an instrument, the parts of your brain that control motor skills actually become more active. Playing music requires a lot of hand-eye coordination, as well as controlling breathing and rhythm.
Playing an instrument not only helps you relax, but also helps build confidence and provides a sense of independence and individuality. Playing music is a form of therapy, which has calming effects on the mind and body. Music reduces blood-pressure levels, boosts up the mood and helps with insomnia and depression. Taking music lessons or just playing every day, keeps the person organized and gives him a purpose. And by the way, 90 minutes of drumming burns as many as 500 calories! Sources:
