Hi Serene,
I usually have a few books on the go too, but mice between fiction and non-fiction depending on my mood, and the book.

At the moment I am reading Girl with a pearl earring by Tracey Chevalier.
Not my usual taste, but my friend gave it to me and said I had to read it, and I am dutifully doing it.

My next book lined up is another gift and recommendation.
The Fifteen lives of Harry August by Catherine Webb.
I have absolutely no idea what it's about, but again I shall dutifully give it a go.

After that I shall probably go back to finish the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin which I started ages ago, but haven't finished yet.

Molly, hi grin wave

Reading your post made me think about how diverse peoples' reading tastes are conversing

I've had many a book (or dvd for that matter) loaned to me with a well-intentioned 'You'll love this!!'.

With doubtful gratitude, I've dutifully opened the cover (or pressed Play) then reached for my handy pack of hot needles which I keep on standby for poking through my eyeballs when the need arises conversing

Book titles will remain nameless, aside from 50 Shades of Kill me now, Please, and I'm still traumatised from being exposed to the opening scenes of The Gormless Notebook laugh

I was fooled into reading 50 Shades as well (by a friend I will never take a recommendation from againmumbling ) . I will never get that time back again.

The Notebook will stay unread.

At least my present recommendations are from people who like books written by literate people roll eyes

I'm bad, I tend to get caught up in what I'm writing instead and have gone from reading 20 books a month to a trickle of 2 or 3.

However, can recommend, if you can get him, Chris Brookmyre, specifically his earlier books. I started reading him because I was needing a crash course in understanding Scots when I moved here, and he is not at all my usual type but so exhilarating and different and violent and OTT (I did say not my usual type) that he leaves me breathless and grabbing for the next. Your starter book for example could be One Fine Day In The Middle Of The Night. The Times described him as tartan noire, another reviewer said like getting a bucket of blood in the face and yet, and yet, howlingly funny. Absolutely brilliant. His characters speak in idiomatic Scots, by the way, but the writing in between is flawless English. Taught me tons.

You managed the whole book? I couldn't get past the first few pages. And not because I'm a prude, except about quality of writing rolling on the floor laughing

She should care, enough people disagreed with us that she's one of the most popular writers around. Shoot me now.

I am a bit dogged (or stupid) about stuff like that. I keep going.

Maybe I thought she would actually learn to write as she was going along roll eyes

But my main reason was, there is no better cure for insomnia than reading that book laugh

serene56: I am a voracious reader, always have at least three books on my bedside table, always non-fiction.

My faves are travel narratives, biographies and true crime.

Currently devouring One Tragic Night, the Oscar Pistorious Murder Trial .. absolutely fascinating and unputdownable

Hi Serene!

I am reading a book about Celts and Vikings and it is fascinating how Vikings knew where to sail before the compass.
wow

Another book about Egypt and on the net about Bolivia and other places in Sudamerica.

There are some fossil stromatolite in Bolivia, worth to see among many other attractions besides the people and their way of living.

I was fooled into going to the movie house to watch this....by a then 'girl friend'. A monumental, international scam is what that was...!
Fortunately for me, I had read some of the reviews...so carried along a flask of whiskey...which proved to be my undoing in my companion's eyes.

serene56: I understand, of course Just that, sometimes, certain parts of a book really resonate with me and I take something away from it.The only time I've strayed from non-fiction was when I was seduced by Hemingway..

That guy can take me to other places.

You know Serene,
Hemingway for me feels like a hot, lazy afternoon, when one has too much time to thing about the Universe and his own existence...somehow after reading him one needs a drink...
As for Fitz and especially Gentle is the night, it feels like walking barefoot on an old wooden floor and with every cracking noise you fear it will crash and drag you down into the dark...but when you reach the other side of the room you are tired, a little sad and with a pinch of relief sprinkled over your soul...

A necessary evil laugh

I obviously haven't gone to see it, and never shall roll eyes

I was sorry when Jamie Dornan took the lead role, as he is quite a good serious actor, and this could kill his chances of getting a decent role ever again mumbling
