I think it's a term that had its origins in Hallmark cards, or maybe Barbara Cartland invented it, not sure
All I know is that anyone who is holding out and waiting to meet theirs might want to consider that life is short and it might be best to get real, get on with it and quit it with the daydreaming

I posed the question in my class this morning and one student gave a great answer,
She thought it was "solemate", so therefore it means the one and only person with whom you share the rest of your life. Brilliant

I think peoples definition of soulmate depends on the relationship you have and are very happy in. To me a soulmate is the person that makes me smile by doing very little, a happy contentness being together, wheather is in silence or doing the things you both love. Some one you want to do nice things for on both sides , its the small considerations and thought. Its the total care you put out for that person above your own needs, to both feel valued and loved on the same level.

In a Soulmate relationship the love is so intense and dominating from the beginning. When the love decline between the two, they realize they don’t know each other. Another reason could be too high expectations when you meet your soulmate; he/she is your solution to everything and he/she will fix your problems.
A life partner relationship is more down-to-earth with more realistic expectations!
In both relationships there are genuine feelings involved.
