Check this out. A company has developed what they call the first real-time language translator that you wear in your ear, like an earbud. When someone speaks in a foreign language, the wearer of this device can understand what they're saying.

Imagine the possibilities that this device will bring to not only world travelers, but to dating sites and skype users, phone calls...endless! I've a feeling this little gadget will be a staple in many people's lives for years to come. I can see a lot of advantages it will bring, but I also think it may provide disadvantages as well--some may feel no need to learn foreign languages, just wear the translator and it'll do the work for you. listen to music

Whatdaya think?

You gotta love those "trekkie" scientists and doctors...About time! The 'Tri-corder' is still being reworked and testing continues at Columbia in NYC I believe. That was a real breakthrough for medical sciences from 2 trekkie medical students some years ago.

I hope to be around by the time they can be used to scan and give the Doc's a complete report on the ailing patient. It'll revolutionize medical clinics/hospitals and doctor visits. thumbs up

Communication (Universal) just may be the big step into at least the ability for all people to understand one another...maybe not at first, but a fine start I would say.

If it reduces misunderstandings because of language barriers, I tend to agree.

This reminds me of a popular restaurant in a nearby town, whose owners/operators spoke in their non-english native tongue to each other. They were doing so amid the patrons one day, as they merrily ate their meals. But one of them happened to know that language and understood what the owners were saying. Turns out they were talking down on their customers, calling them pigs and such as they laughed. That person who understood them got up, chewed them out in their own language and then told everyone what the owners had said.
It wasn't too long afterward that the restaurant closed down due to lack of business.

Situations such as this could be avoided if having the knowledge that universal communication is easily obtained, even through translators.

Yep, same thing happened in a bigger hair Salon I used to work in upTown. I was giving my client a very nice hair style and new cut. The 2 idiots. one worked there and the other one would come in and they spoke Italian. Well, my client was the one being talked about and it was pretty nasty stuff they were talking out loud about. She turned to them and spoke back to them in Italian (and she was good) she kept her composure and might as well have slapped them both in the face. I had a talk with the one that worked there and said that if she didn't come back he was going to pay me in cash every 4 weeks. But she did return and they never did that again! LOL... this was about 20 years ago at least and you could still be a bit more stern with those kind of guys. Today you would think that there is going to be someone that will understand and it is disrespectful to say these things, especially out loud right in front of her. I never knew what she said to them. But I know it seemed to really shut them up fast and they quietly got up and went outside.

Funny how some, who knows another language or languages may conceive the notion that others don't know those languages. They can easily become adept at speaking those languages in a harmful way about others, thinking they get one up on them because they won't understand what's being said. With technology such as these new translators, they'll have to reconsider their position once those devices become popular. It could be touch and go until translators become the norm and we see many people wearing them.

Spies could have a field day with these things. uh oh

According to that article, those translators may be on the market sometime around July, or around that time. I don't think they'll break words down into meaningful form as definition, but will allow the wearer to hear conversations spoken in a foreign language, converted to your native language. So you'll be hearing a foreigner speaking in your language by means of that translator.

I'm sure that by using an audible language teaching course along with that translator, you can learn each word that way too. Hear it in its native form and again as translated through the device. Though most courses already have words converted for you.

As for where to get them, keep checking your local electronics stores, as they'll be advertising them once they go public. Price could be upwards, as most newly introduced technology often comes with a high price tag, until competition by other companies start leveling the market. As for me, I'll be waiting until the dust settles before buying one...they'll be a lot cheaper by then. laugh

I am wondering if these translators will also help to clarify accents. I sometimes find it hard to understand certain foreigners who can speak english, just because of their acute accents.

The translators are going to put a lot of spies, language translators, instructors etc. out of a job, around the world. Many will have to seek the continuance of their trade in third and fourth world countries as did the Stasie agents with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Russian did not want them and a good 80% had to emigrate to Latin America, especially Cuba where many found employment in running local police forces and Cuba's Intelligence services. The instantaneous language translators will have a world-wide effect for all 'civilized' countries and create a huge black market (to be run by former spies) for them in poor countries...new inventions always have unintended consequences

My thoughts exactly. And I'm sure some people immediately begin thinking of alternative ways to use brand new gadgets when they're first introduced. This translator is no exception and could also be considered highly acclaimed (by the underground) and sought after already, just for that purpose.

As I still have my original Klingon Dictionary, I just may get one as I've always wanted to hear The Gettysburg Address, the Star Spangled Banner in Klingonese, so it'll just be a matter of ring it in, press the right button and it recites them...hey, lots of good Rock & Roll songs to hear in Klingonese also...Chuck Berry, Little Richard, "Wild Thing' by the Troggs...I can't wait!rolling on the floor laughing

I do a good bit of translating for work. Seeing texts translated by google translate do have errors as words can have different meanings. Even brochures with technical content translated by official translators are not able to get the "technical jargon" in some cases.

This won't be 100% and some of the translated content will be confusing. conversing

That's another good point. And although they're (supposedly) not using google, but Babel Fish as the base of their translation, still it is not 100% accurate either. But it is opening new doors for the future as well as offering room for improvements. thumbs up

I agree is a good invention, perhaps for the Travel Tourism industry, but is quite expensive US$299 isn´t it?, with that money you can pay a intensive language course where you will develop you LANGUAGE SKILLS, and what is the point to have another translator device when you can use the translation software already exists on the iPhones, it uses a conversion option using tecnology, this is great and quite good for those globetrotters.
