YouMeUs: Check this out. A company has developed what they call the first real-time language translator that you wear in your ear, like an earbud. When someone speaks in a foreign language, the wearer of this device can understand what they're saying.
Imagine the possibilities that this device will bring to not only world travelers, but to dating sites and skype users, phone calls...endless! I've a feeling this little gadget will be a staple in many people's lives for years to come. I can see a lot of advantages it will bring, but I also think it may provide disadvantages as well--some may feel no need to learn foreign languages, just wear the translator and it'll do the work for you.
Whatdaya think?
There's a vid on this site that gives you an idea of how it works and what to expect...
Lonely1: No prices yet..that will be a must have...equal to the iPhone invention..be prepared for the big guys to come calling and hope it is not a scam.
It appears as though they're holding reservations or pre-orders on the device, which should mean that they're very close to releasing the product. The company would go belly up if it turns out to be a scam.
mikemo68: I agree is a good invention, perhaps for the Travel Tourism industry, but is quite expensive US$299 isn´t it?, with that money you can pay a intensive language course where you will develop you LANGUAGE SKILLS, and what is the point to have another translator device when you can use the translation software already exists on the iPhones, it uses a conversion option using tecnology, this is great and quite good for those globetrotters.
As with any new-to-the-market technology, comes a hefty price tag. As more brands start hitting the market it'll level the playing field and prices will become more reasonable and affordable.
Since this device is slated to cover a massive amount of different languages to translate, it would be cheaper than having to buy multiple language courses, which is impractical for a lot of people. Learning a foreign language or two is more probable than learning all of them. That's where this device comes in.
This is totally different than the iphone, in that you can sit down with someone face to face who doesn't know your language (and you don't know theirs) and actually hold a legible, vocal conversation with them. It breaks the language barrier in real time. It'll also interact with iphones to boot.
Agreed that it'll become a staple with globetrotters, but also think of the possibilities of it being useful in emergencies and crises where language barriers exist. We'll be able to handle such situations more efficiently. A major plus if it also helps in saving lives.
