In a coded admission that his scaremongering about cutting ties with Brussels may have gone too far, the Prime Minister accepted that the UK's "brilliant economy" was strong enough to survive whatever the result of the EU referendum on June 23.
"We can find our way whatever the British people choose," he said.
Mr Cameron also promised to stop all personal attacks on Euro-sceptic Tories following concerns the "blue on blue" civil war was getting out of control.
And he denied suggestions that he is a "closet Brexiteer" who has always privately wanted to quit the EU but is campaigning to remain out of political expediency.
He said: "I'm not really a closet anything."
The Prime Minister appeared to tone down his "Project Fear" warnings as he was questioned about the referendum on the final day of the G7 Summit of world leaders in Ise-Shima, Japan.
His softer approach to the referendum issue on display at a news conference to end the summit was seen as a marked change in the rhetoric surrounding the referendum debate.
He spoke out after leaders at the summit including US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel adopted a strongly-worded joint statement warning of alleged global economic shocks that could be caused by a Brexit.
