scrutineer is the word you are looking for . I have done this work several elections .I don't know the Aussie system but I would be surprised if a scrutineer could just wander in without first being cleared no matter who it was . And you reckon you have problem with you surname voting . Here the returning officer sits with scrutineers either side . He calls the name or trys to as most cannot pronounce it . let alone spell it out for the scrutineers to cross it off their rolls for the party runners to take back to the various party headquarters .

Scrutineers are appointed by candidates to observe the voting, and counting of the votes. Scrutineers have the right to be present when the ballot boxes are sealed and opened and when the votes are sorted and counted so that they may check any possible irregularities.

Information for scrutineers

When my voting papers were sent to me I received email advice to that effect and when my vote was received back i received email conformation to

more's the pity
I think they will get over that no worries

Pauline Hanson to receive $1.2m electoral funding rebate

The Nick Xenophon Team is expected to receive somewhere in the vicinity of $400,000 after the South Australian senator significantly increased his power bloc in both the upper and lower houses.

But those figures pale in comparison to the $20 million-plus the Labor and Liberal parties are expected to reap in the amorphous wake of the longest election campaign in 50 years.

Add to all of that the cost of counting the votes, checking for errors - they do happen after working a 12 hour day then counting by the same people for the next 6-8 hours. Some people started working on the elections 3 weeks before Polling Day without a break (people did not want to queue on Polling Day or were working or away) and then the demand by Parliament that counting should be completed ASAP.

I only did 2 days before Polling Day and then managed only a 6.30am to midnight on Polling Day (very efficient counting organised by me at my Polling Place) followed by working Sun-Sat with Sunday off. And looks like it will still be going next week.

Why are there errors? Some people have such bad writing that it is difficult to interpret the numbers. Even on a ballot of 5 candidates there appears a number of errors such as
- multiple #1
- #6
- 5 ticks
- #3 repeated
- #4 missed.

These are just a few that I saw today.

I do not agree with the USA system of only 2 parties but something must be done to limit eligibility to getting a name on a voting slip.

easy as:
Get rid of the people that count votes
Use a different form of marking to replace counters with a machine that counts votes

First computers i ever had knowledge of the Americans used to order stores for delivery in Vietnam, you punched holes in a card and computer read what that meant

e.g. went out to the docks to pick up five machine guns, there were five-thousand waiting for me to fit in my landrover

Politicians would love the extra votes so would be win win for everyone as the counters could go to the beach or whatever instead of counting votes

ps......I want this system to remain as it means that about every 18 months or so I can managed a bit of honest work instead of being a 100% Dole Bludger as I now describe myself.

I am struggling a bit because I do feel that after starting to work 49 years ago (okay a bit of weekend and school holiday work at the beginning) and then full-time since late 1969 until stress (and some other health issues) got to me in 2013 I do need some time out.

I have a brother who started work as a bricklayer in March 1964 and still lays bricks to this day. Okay, he does say that a 40 hour week is starting to get to him.

You could always join OneNation and try to get elected . Think of the benefits , slagging off everybody not a OneNation member , the more slagging you do the harder it looks that you are working . Power is a chick magnet as well , access to cheap booze , travel you name it , just don't forget who ya friends are .

yeah lots of stuff goes by, if you spoke to depositors in State Banks the same sort of treatment occurred. With Supers even police super fund got cleaned out.
Its not just the one side of politics both are tared with the same brush, you get to vote for one or other even if both party leaders are full of it, both running around pleading for votes then come out claiming some sought of unrealistic mandate. and promptly bury the peoples rights to be represented in parliament in declaring he/that party is in charge.

Same parties who sunk family farms and small family business, sold pretty much all the countries utilities, port leases... Both parties been feeding china anything they wanted, accommodated chinese communist parties desire to smash capitalism by flooding economy with free good, chainsaws, power tools all manner of goods produced in prisons or state owned companies.

Currently i am watch queensland government try and force clive palmer to rectify something the queensland government did in Townsvile.
Dishonesty runs rampant right across the political divide

wash2u: Rob, I describe myself as a "Dole Bludger" because at my time in life I do receive the Dole (now called New Start Allowance even though I am not new out of school of fresh off the boat ) and I do not work.

Due to a lot of mental stress followed by a few problems getting my heart working the way it should be I am not working. And not actively seeking employment. Okay, I have spent the last 2 years volunteering with the Salvos and do feel that the pittance the dole gives me equates to the 5 days a week I spend there.

But no way can I ever support the leftist socialist communist unions who supported the NSW Laboring Govt to steal $650 million from the Super fund I am in back in 2002 (equates to $300,000 each member back then). I was forced by my Union to join that Super Fund back in 1983 and then they stabbed me and my fellow contributors in the back 20 years later with all of those false promises of retiring early with "a decent income in your retirement instead of a lowly pension."

No political party has offered greater wealth. Libs offer only an attempt to stablise our economy while Laboring promises us high wages for doing nothing because it is so much cheaper to import everything. The Greens only want a beautiful country and to "Stop agricultural pursuits and manufacturing as they prevent green grass growing and the foxes and rabbits from breeding."

Now Super I have a small super

I have lived in Melbourne for 14 years now and the Federal Government had by then made it compulsory for ALL employers to contribute 6% of all employees income on top of their wage/salary to a Super Fund.

If you had an employer not contributing, then you must have worked for a very shonky firm.

Getting down to the last days of counting votes in this election. I have only managed 12 hours work this week spread out over 3 days. Will have at least 1 short day next week.

Why am I/we still counting? It takes time for those voting in Warsaw, Belgrade, Stockholm, Dublin, London (a few spots I picked up this week when checking envelopes) to get to us in our small neck of the woods in Victoria. Fact is that every vote is accounted for, even those who find it necessary to include a picture of their small appendage ..... an average of about 2" although today a voter did manage to enlighten us with something worth noting (compared to those ......) while someone (suspect the same voter) used the full extent of the Senate paper to ensure we did not miss on noticing him.

Now for the big question. Does every vote count?

YES

I am sitting in a Division with 5 candidates. Information on the Ballot Paper says "Number the squares from 1 to 5."

For all of those that voted "1,2,3,4,6" IT IS TIME THAT YOU REVISITED PLAY SCHOOL.

And someone should also note that S.H.I.T.S in the squares means that that was an Informal Ballot and no one gets your vote (repetition of a number or letter is an Informal Vote).

epirb: did it lookin familiar to you ??

i listened to Donald Trump ranting today, seems to me he is saying he gunner get rid of the republican parties (ronald regans) new world order of 1984.
Gold is good for nothing, price of goods and services are to be set by supply and demand (Cheating-Keating kicks off Australian compliance)

Former President George Bush, who spent eight years as Ronald Reagan's vice president, remembered his friend Saturday as a kind, decent man whose beliefs did not waver. "I think history will give him great credit for standing for a few principles, and standing firmly for those principles, and thus setting an example for the American people, whether they agreed with him or not," Bush said, standing alongside his wife, Barbara, outside their summer home at Walkers Point...

April 24, 1917 - The First Liberty Loan Act authorized the issue of $5 billion worth of bonds at 3.5 percent interest three weeks after the United States declared war on Germany.

April 9, 1924 - The Dawes Plan was transmitted to the Reparation Commission. It was accepted by Germany on April 16, 1924. While it was a short term success, the Dawes Plan proved to be a monumental failure because the annual payments required were too large and it required the United States to give massive loans to Germany to pay reparations. The countries receiving this money then used it to repay war loans to the United States. This cycle meant that the stock market crash of 1929 caused Germany to no longer be able to pay reparations and prevented the Allies from repaying debt owed to the United States.

April 5, 1933 - President Franklin Roosevelt issued an order making it illegal to hoard gold coin, gold bullion or gold certificates. Violation of this order was punishable by a $10,000 fine or 10 years in prison, making it a felony to own gold. Eventually, gold coins from 1933 and earlier were exempted from this rule so coin collectors could avoid prosecution.

January 17, 1934 - It became illegal for private citizens to own gold certificates following the implementation of the Gold Reserve Act of 1934.

January 30, 1934 - The Gold Reserve Act withdrew gold coins from circulation, provided for the devaluation of the dollar's gold content, and created the Exchange Stabilization Fund.

August 23, 1935 - The Banking Act of 1935 removed the Secretary of the Treasury and the Comptroller of the Currency from the Federal Reserve Board.

August 31, 1935 - President Roosevelt signed the Neutrality Act, which was meant to prevent the United States government from entering into activities that could lead the country into a foreign war.

January 13, 1937 - The first deposit of gold bullion was shipped to the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox.

July 1, 1944 - Delegates from all 45 Allied nations gathered at the United States Monetary and Fiscal Conference, better known as the Bretton Woods conference, in New Hampshire. The conference resulted in the creation of the International Monetary Fund or IMF and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The IBRD is commonly referred as the World Bank today, but it is actually the largest of five organizations that make up the World Bank Group.

December 18, 1971 - President Nixon declared that the official U.S. price of gold would be raised to $38 per ounce, devaluing the dollar.

April 3, 1972 - President Richard Nixon raised the official U.S. gold price from $35 an ounce to $38 an ounce. The change in gold price was the first made since an Executive Order by President Roosevelt in 1934.

August 13, 1981 - President Reagan signed the Economic Recovery Tax Act, reducing income taxes by approximately 23 percent over a three year period and lowering estate taxes. The ERTA also introduced indexing for inflation into the tax system.

Uncle Sam Steps In
The U.S. government became concerned over what it saw as a clear attempt at manipulating the nation's silver reserves, and the fact that this corner involved the Middle East added some venom to the government's reaction: after all, the 1970s oil crisis was still fresh in the nation's mind. Federal commodities regulators introduced special rules to prevent any more long position contracts from being written or sold for silver futures. This stopped the Hunts from increasing their positions by temporarily suspending the fundamental rules of the commodities market. With longs frozen and shorts free to pile in, the price of silver began to slide. Margin calls on the loans began to take a toll on the Hunts' reserves to the point where they were paying millions a day in calls, storage fees and interest.

The commission charged that the Hunts and their associates acquired more than 100 million ounces of silver bullion in the period covered by the complaint. At the same time, they established long positions in silver futures contracts--agreements to buy the metal at a later date--that represented a potential demand equivalent to 130% of the total U.S. industrial consumption of silver in 1979 and half of the entire world silver production that year.

In January 1980 gold was fixed at a record 850 USD an ounce while high inflation, strong oil prices , Soviet intervention in Afghanistan as well as the impact of the Iranian revolution prompted investors to heavily buy the metal.
and then gold fell 43% to US$484/oz on 17 March 1980

With about 3 million upper house votes still to be counted, the Coalition has won 27 seats but could gain up to three more while Labor has 23 seats and may win three to four more.

The Greens have six definite seats with three still in play. On the crossbench One Nation looks set to pick up three seats, the Nick Xenophon Team has won three, Jacqui Lambie has been re-elected and Derryn “Human Headline” Hinch has one seat.

The Liberal Democrats, Christian Democratic Party, National Party in Western Australia and Family First are also in with a chance of picking up some of the final Senate seats around the country, amid predictions the crossbench could be made up of about 10 independents.

The Senate count is more complicated than the count for the House of Representatives. Counting of first preferences begins on election night but the full count cannot be completed until several weeks after the election.

It should be noted that while the method of marking and counting Senate ballot papers has changed, the processes for determining the quota, transferring surplus votes and the exclusion of candidates, as outlined below, have not changed.

Formula for determining a Senate quota
(Number of formal ballot papers / (Number of senators to be elected + 1)) rounded down + 1 = Senate quota

Example of determining a Senate quota
This is how the quota for NSW was calculated at the 2013 Senate election.

(4 376 143 / (6 + 1)) + 1 = 625 164

Therefore the quota, or number of votes required to be elected, in NSW at the 2013 federal election was 625 164.

Bit of an own goal, Malcolm saying she wasn't welcome in Parliament, boosted her votes heaps.

Funny watching all the do-gooders on Q+A monday night, all combined they didnt really land a blow on her. She's speaking much better this time around, I think she'll do some good things for this country unlike those career pollies feathering their own nests.

I'll be honest never ever voted for Pauline .
Like Nick Xenophon never in my life voted for him he looked like a show pony in state politics .
He left and went federal never voted for him ,

Then I got pissed at labor voted greens . Didn't like their policies this time couldn't vote for the big parties . Then they started saying don't vote for Xenophon . So I kept seeing it on the TV here in Adelaide don't vote for Xenophon . Malcom saying it's bad the liberal party don't control the senate don't vote Xenophon so I voted Xenophon .
Funny a democratic country saying who we can't vote for don't think so .
And my preferences went to labor so the sitting liberal member lost his seat suck it up princess

For too long both parties have relied on- we're not quite as bad as them... Hopefully this election has shown people can vote outside labor/liberal. The greens are in with labor when they're not just being dills, dunno a lot about NX but I agree with his stance on poker machines.
