LONDON - Theresa May looked set to become Britain's next prime minister Monday after her sole remaining rival, Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom, unexpectedly withdrew from the race to lead the Conservative Party.

Graham Brady, the head of the party committee running the contest, said the party board would meet to discuss confirming May as the winner. He did not say how long that might take.

May, who also supported remaining in the EU, is one of the most experienced ministers in Cameron's Cabinet, serving in the notoriously difficult job of interior minister for six years. If confirmed, the 59-year-old politician could become Britain's prime minister within days. She would be the second woman to hold the job.

Leadsom's announcement came after a weekend uproar over her comments about the role of motherhood in politics. Leadsom at first defended, and then apologized for, an interview in which she said that being a mother "means you have a very real stake in the future of our country." Leadsom has children; May does not.

I heard the interview by Leadsome, it was dirty. She probably wouldn't have made a very diplomatic prime minister.

As for Europe, May will probably just try to get as many benefits for Britain as she can. The good without the bad.

It's rare to find someone with no principles who thinks that rigidly and battles so hard. She makes me think of Stalin.

Aragorn11: She's definitely not my cup of tea Mike Ironic really, a Referendum to take the country back, has led to an unelected, by the people, Prime Minister, while all the Brexit canditates have flown the roost or been shafted, leaving the headache up to the adults

All we can hope for is that someone will start a petition against her automatic choice or the new Secret Socialist movement assassinates, her like Bush and B Liar collaborated on to "remove" Kelly over his No WMD in Iraq confirmation and call it suicide.

Who are you thinking of for a new PM if we have a new government?, l would suggest that there is not one person in any political party that could run a bath let alone a country.

Having seen something like this happen in another country l think know what the outcome would be. Although l know there are lots of Trolls here on CS that will say l am wrong.

Felt strongly at the time there should have been a full enquiry into David Kelly's death and still do. I believe documents on the case re freedom of information are locked up for 75 years doh

Petitions won't make a blind it of difference in this case imo.
Be careful what you wish for Mike laugh Brexit has lead the UK here and Gov's the world over will still shot on the little guy whether they are Irish, British or the EU.

The death of Dr Kelly is the same as the death of Princess Diana and that of President John F Kennedy. We all know what happened but we are all not sure.

I don't know what happened laugh

The evidence never pointed to suicide though and looked one cover up after another.

The Working people of the UK could vote to offer the PM job to Barak Obama and give him and his family Instant British Citizenship next year.

He is more in thinking and in line with honest working folk who pay their taxes and pensioners than any of our Eton Oxbridge Other public school Ruling class Career Political Puss heads.

So Teresa may is prime minister, chosen by the journalist not by the public. British police will change and become a security service run by her husband. So glad I left England.

and Robin Cook.. as some people claim. his resignation from the cabinet on the eve of the Iraq war was powerful and damaging for the pro war.

I cannot say too much about Mr Cook only that l think he was a man of many sides and his departure at that time was seen as 'collateral damage', even at the end of the enquiry recently we are not really any the wiser because l believe that much of what was said was dramatized to some extent and the vast portion of blame was laid at Tony Blair's feet knowing possibly that in the end there would be much talk but no action.

I dont think Teresa May is the right person to lead the talks about the UK leaving EU, I dont remember her speaking in public for staying in the EU, she must of had her eye on 'Daves' job so maybe did not want too?

Zero Zilch or nothing just about describes what she did to stop or slow down the immigration (from the rest of the world as we cannot stop EU immigration) into the UK as one of the longest serving Home Secretary's the UK has had.
