'We must take revenge': Chinese newspaper urges country to declare WAR on Australia and warns of 'strike' after Julie Bishop's comments over South China Sea dispute

A state-run Chinese newspaper has demanded 'revenge' against Australia after it backed an international tribunal's landmark decision to reject its claims over the South China Sea.

China was found to have violated the Philippines' maritime right by erecting artificial islands which decimated natural coral reefs and disrupted both fishing and oil exploration

In what The Sun described as an 'immediate show of strength', the Chinese navy launched into military drills with their Russian allies in the East China Sea.

China has no legal basis for claiming it owns huge parts of the South China Sea, The Hague rules… but Beijing says it rejects the decision
Judges at The Hague also found the country had aggravated the seething regional dispute and violated the Philippines' maritime rights

It also found that China had interfered with Philippine petroleum exploration at Reed Bank, tried to stop fishing by Philippine vessels within the country’s exclusive economic zone and failed to prevent Chinese fishermen from fishing within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone at Mischief Reef and Second Thomas Shoal.

The Chinese government has said:

Prepare for possible ‘war on water’ over South China Sea tensions, Beijing tells citizens

The Chinese defense minister has warned the tense situation in the South China Sea poses the threat of a direct confrontation and has called on the military, police and general population to be ready to defend the country's territorial integrity.
Chang Wanquan made the statement while inspecting military installations in China's eastern coastal Zhejiang Province, state news agency Xinhua reported, without giving the timing of the comments.

The seriousness of the national security situation should be recognized, particularly when it comes to threats posed at sea, Chang said.

The Chinese military, law enforcement and citizens must be ready for mobilization in the event of a “people's war at sea,” he added.

The general public should be educated about national defense issues because national sovereignty and territorial integrity are at risk, according to the minister.

Chang’s statement comes amid unprecedented tensions over the disputed islands in the South China Sea, where Beijing has been building airstrips and military installations on reclaimed reefs and islands in waters also claimed by a number of other Asian states.

China’s 2.3 million-strong People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is “fully confident and capable of addressing various security threats and provocations,” Chang said last weekend while addressing a summit dedicated to the 89th anniversary of the PLA's founding.

Stash of US-made heavy weapons found in terrorist-held Aleppo district

Footage has emerged online allegedly showing mortars, anti-tank missiles and grenades being uncovered along with a quantity of western (mostly US)-made weapons and ammunition in territories abandoned by terrorists in Syrian Aleppo.
The video appeared online on Thursday and purported to show the discovery of a large cache of western arms and ammunition in a house in Aleppo’s eastern Bani Zaid district. The majority of the weapons appear to be of US origin and include US-made anti-tank missiles system (TOW 2A), American UN0181 missiles, as well as US-made 81mm mortars and ammunition. Some of the boxes containing weapons are labeled with the letters ‘USA’.

Vietnam reacts sharply to Chinese defense minister's call for war in East Sea

Vietnam responds after Chinese minister calls for 'people’s war' at sea

Officials of other countries need to speak and act in accordance with official statements as well as their nations’ obligations, that is, repecting international law, refraining from using or threatening to use force, and actively contributing to peace and stability in the region and the world,” Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Hai Binh said at a press briefing on Thursday.

The comments follow a Chinese minister’s call for the country’s army, police and people to prepare for a war at sea.

China's Xinhua news agency on August 2 reported that Chinese defense minister Chang Wanquan had urged preparations for a “people’s war at sea” to counter offshore security threats and safeguard what he called Chinese sovereignty.

Lockheed-Martin delivered Israel's first F-35 Lightning II "Adir". It has passed all tests, and is due to be delivered in December.

The F-35 Lightning II Adir has top-of-the-line stealth technology, highly sensitive sensors of every kind, and fuel-optimizing computer systems to keep it in the air.

Access to the F-35’s software source code remains a live issue for the Israelis, as it has been with the Australians, British, and others. That access is necessary when air forces want to upgrade the aircraft’s computers, and/or integrate new weapons, communications, or electronic warfare systems. Israeli planes generally undergo heavy modifications to incorporate Israeli electronics and weapons systems, and the USA has allowed the Israelis access to the F-15 and F-16’s software. Israel has since exported a number of those enhancements for F-16 and F-15 customers in Asia and Latin America.

F-35B Lightning II: Everything you need to know about Britain's new £70m stealth fighter

The F-35 Strike Fighter has been declared ‘combat capable’. But is it?

CATCH IN THE FINE-PRINT?
The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence was earlier this week startled by a new rule that may have serious implications for Australia’s own force of 72 strike fighters.
They’re not allowed to use the combat jet’s electro-optical target designation system.
Without it, they can’t drop bombs or fire missiles.
This is the advanced network of lasers, infra-red sensors and computer systems that ‘paint’ a target with a laser to guide weapons with pinpoint accuracy.
The F-35’s owner’s manual apparently came with an unexpected limitation: The targeting system is only allowed to be used inside the United States — for security reasons.
Among the restrictions are a ban on anyone being within 9km of the aircraft when the system is in use, and nobody with a set of binoculars within 33km.
“If these restrictions stand, then training in the UK will be almost impossible,” a Ministry of Defence meeting was told.
The same would apply to Australia. Live combat practice would be restricted to simulators. And functionality, performance and reliability assessments under Australian conditions would be curtailed.

Naruhito has only one daughter, so since only males can inherit the Chrysanthemum Throne, the throne after Naruhito would pass to his brother, Prince Akishino, and then to nine-year-old nephew Hisahito.

Before Hisahito's birth, no male had been born into the imperial family for more than four decades. This prompted discussion of equal inheritance for women, a move opposed by traditionalists eager to preserve a male line they believe goes back more than 2,000 years.

However, following the bank’s decision to cut the key UK interest rate to a new record low of 0.25%, as well as other stimulus measures including corporate bond purchases and a new asset purchase programme, the Pound plummeted across the board.

he Swiss Franc has fallen relatively limp in recent days, and a lack of solid Swiss data has made it difficult for the currency to hold its ground, allowing the Pound to gain on it until Thursday.

The Bank of Japan (BoJ) announced its latest stimulus package recently, which was surprisingly small causing markets to rush into the Japanese Yen (JPY).

Poland’s banks won a reprieve as the government backed away from plans for a forced, one-off conversion of $36bn of Swiss franc-denominated mortgages into zloty, which regulators had warned could spark a financial crisis.

As in several other central and eastern European countries, more than half a million Poles took out Swiss franc mortgages before the 2008 financial crisis to benefit from lower Swiss interest rates.

But the zloty halved in value against the Swiss currency in the past six years. Many borrowers have been left struggling to service their debt and with properties worth less than the loans.

Coming from a nation that prides its citizens’ “golden hands” that can fix anything, newly minted Czech central bank Governor Jiri Rusnok needs those skills now more than ever.
Rusnok has said developments don’t warrant more action by the central bank, which has bought about $24 billion worth of foreign currencies to keep the koruna weaker since 2013. At the same time, he’s made clear the policy can’t go on forever.

BEIJING - The Chinese government has asked Singapore to "respect" China's position on the outcome of a recent ruling by an international tribunal and the consensus it has reached with Asean.

In a statement on Friday (Aug 5), the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Hua Chunying said China had made its position on the issue "very clearly".

"The related ruling is illegal, invalid and has no binding force," she said.

"China hopes that Singapore...can maintain an objective and fair position as the coordinator of China and Asean dialogue relations, so as to advance Sino-Singapore relations and healthy and stable China-Asean ties."

Malcolm Turnbull treads middle path as South China Sea tensions rise

15 Apr 2016

Malcolm Turnbull has called for restraint by all countries involved in South China Sea tensions, as Beijing becomes increasingly strident and the US stations more warplanes in the Philippines in readiness for a potential military conflict.

An international tribunal will rule within weeks on China's use of artificial islands to claim territory and station military assets.

But with the crisis in South China Sea set to worsen, state-owned media has published thinly veiled threats of economic consequences for Australia if Canberra continues to side with the US and its allies.

In an attempt at intimidation timed for Mr Turnbull's arrival, the China Daily warned Australia of financial consequences if it offered resistance to Beijing's territorial ambitions in the region.

Japan protests after Chinese coastguard and fishing boats sail near disputed islands in East China Sea
Posted about an hour ago

Japan has issued a new protest to Beijing after Chinese coastguard ships and about 230 fishing vessels sailed close to what Tokyo considers its territorial waters around disputed islets in the East China Sea.

Three of the six Chinese coastguard ships that were in the so-called contiguous waters on Saturday appeared to be armed, Japan's coastguard said.

Chinese fleet sails near Japanese Senkaku islands

A Japanese foreign ministry spokesman said the fleet's despatch was a unilateral escalation of tension in the area.

Beijing has also become increasingly assertive about its territorial claims in the South China Sea.
But last month a tribunal under the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague ruled that most of Beijing's claims in that sea had no legal basis.
China said it would ignore the decision.

Practically all nations are able to stake out a territorial claim based on ancient history.

Jakarta, GIVnews.com – South China Sea has been a major source of headache for diplomats all throughout Southeast Asia for the past few years. China claims about 90% of the sea with its infamous nine-dash line, creating conflicting territorial overlaps with Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Brunei Darussalam. While China does not have territorial disputes with Indonesia, it claims an overlap between its self-proclaimed nine-dash line and Natuna Islands’ exclusive economic zone.

The spyware used in cyber attacks on Vietnam’s major airports and national carrier last month is now suspected of having bombarded many more official sites, amid tensions with China over territory in the disputed South China Sea.
A malicious code disguised as anti-virus software found lurking in everything from government offices to banks, major companies and universities was the same as that used in "politically-colored" attacks on two of the country’s biggest airports and Vietnam Airlines, said Ngo Tuan Anh, vice chairman of Hanoi-based network security company Bkav Corp.

Like many government information systems, the Census site was outsourced to an external contractor: IBM. As well as writing the software required for the website, IBM was responsible for providing the computers that hosted it.

Denial-of-service attacks (can be likened to your repersentation on the floor of parliament)

Such an attack can be performed in many ways, including interfering with physical infrastructure. However, the most common denial-of-service technique used against publicly available websites is to overwhelm it with huge numbers of requests, overloading the servers and crowding out legitimate users

Britain & Vietnam cozy up on defense amid deepening South China Sea dispute

Britain and Vietnam are building fresh ties after their respective defense ministers quietly met to discuss future cooperation.

Although barely reported on in the UK press, Ministry of Defence (MoD) minister Earl Howe met with Vietnam’s Deputy Defense Minister Nguyen Chi Vinh before a conference on UN peacekeeping in London on Thursday.

Vinh suggested that the UK consider helping Vietnam deal with the enduring consequences of the US war in Vietnam and offered to act as a conduit for the UK in the region.

The officials reportedly also discussed future defense cooperation and hydrography and agreed that national disputes should be dealt with peacefully.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon was told by Vinh that his country supports the UK taking up an observer role in future conferences of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) defense ministers.

Fallon, in turn, promised that Vietnamese troops would be able to train in the UK.

Besides the goodwill of India and attempts to nurture goodwill from the UK, Vietnam recently received a pledge from Japan to provide it with patrol ships to better conduct maritime law enforcement operations.

Mr Duterte, who in recent days has called for US troops to move out of the Southern Philippines and hinted at buying Russian and Chinese weapons, said he did not want his country involved in US freedom of navigation patrols in the South China Sea.

"We will not join any expedition or patrolling the sea. I will not allow it because I do not want my country to be in involved in a hostile act," Mr Duterte said on Tuesday.

Mr Shorten also enunciated a subtle recalibration of Labor's South China Sea and freedom of navigation policy.

The Opposition leader said he "certainly believed" in Australia exercising freedom of navigation and over flight in the water and air around the South China Sea. But he said he "was not convinced" Australian warships should join an American convoy to challenge China in the disputed waters.
