mollybaby: Some people use the guise of honesty or bluntness to be rude or uncomplimentary . And then just shrug it off by saying they were just being honest.

That's just plain spiteful .. It's like saying to someone "you have a big nose" or a "big bum", as though that person isn't conscious of it already..

Yeah, everybody is painfully aware of their own body parts.

They don't need somebody else's helpful comments

There is, however, constructive criticism , when a friend or loved one lets you know if you're putting on weight or your outfit isn't particularly flattering. Even a sudden change of personality may help a person in the long run.
I would expect a friend to tell me things that may improve me as a person..

If the person is genuinely caring for your wellbeing, that is different.

As for outfits, yeah, if something is really terrible I'd tell them.

But if they had bought an outfit, and I didn't like it but it wasn't terrible then I probably wouldn't say anything. Just because I don't like it doesn't mean the should feel bad about it.

Yep, and you can tell someone something in a tactful way, therefore still being honest, yet not necessarily complimenting them and not being nasty about it, either.

I would accept criticism from someone who knew me well.. It shows that they care about you & want you to improve yourself , as a pose to some stranger , who may say something out of spite.. However, there are those who are oversensitive, who can't take criticism , whether it be constructive or not.

One2note: It's aparent that there are some fragile members on here who constantly need their fragile egos massaged... Say anything that doesn't resemble a compliment, and you get your head bitten off in an instant..
My point is, should you rather someone give you a compliment , which may give you a false sense of security , or would you prefer the honest approach, which may not be to your liking??

I prefer to be punched in the face if that´s what you want to do

One2note: Absolutely, sometimes the truth hurts, but by being honest & upfront may be the slap in the face that person needs to change a particular imperfection , like weight gain for instance.

Or they'll think "it hurts getting slapped in the face, I want a cake".
The trick with fat people is remember to contain your disgust.

There are kinder hints that may be useful, like enrolling them to a gym or dance classes. professor laugh

To go one further I'd say all social shaming should be founded on pity and not disgust. It's "oh what a pity imagine what you could look like", and not "oh no what a disgusting fat pig you are"

Ego massaging is hypocrisy,
it definitely doesn't do any good to the "fragile" ego owner...
I'll never make a compliment that isn't well deserved and expect to be treated the same way...
Yesterday, while walking to my office in the morning, a client of mine (after the usual greeting) had honey dripping down her neck complimenting the top I carried on a hanger, the bloody thing was my dark blue work uniform... roll eyes

PS She won't get a discount anyway... laugh

I totally misunderstood your fat shamming program , from barf to daydream , might still have to resort to the disgusted model for those hardened fatties . Still it has been said that's its possible to catch more flies with honey than vinegar
