There's plenty of reasons why some create a profile and leave;
They could be new to online dating and discovered it wasn't their thing.
Some could have forgotten that they joined.
Some could have found their match and no longer need this site.
Some are scammers (often abandon certain profiles as they've created several)
Some are trolls having several profiles to fall back on.
Some are too busy IRL to log in.
And a dumpster load of other reasons.
Before contacting anyone, check to see when the last time they had logged in (it's on their profile). If it's been quite a few days, even months, there's a good chance that should you write to them, you'll get no response.
It would be nice if we had a feature allowing us to hide certain profiles from our viewing, such as those no-shows. That would help out when searching. If they were to log back in their profile would automatically be shown again.

See it often with what looks like genuine woman , maybe they get flooded with mail and don't come back after all the filth they read . Its a free site to that has the issue of no investment so nothing lost by leaving . It would help if there was a big fat button that said "delete profile here"Then ... that´s it. Hi,
Like any forum or sites , you get the ones who do come in some just once a week or so, and then you have some of us who come in every day I do, and every few days I may miss not coming in, unless im going over to Australia , then I may miss a day or two,
I am on quite a few forums and come on same 15 every da y/ night, its about 20 in fact, im very regimented in being able to do that and yes do a few emails to different ones I know,
It depends on how many letters / posts I read and how many I,ll answer and I may wait a day or two to see what the subject matter is about, and read first and think about it, I pretty much know who will reply and what we talk about / discuss ,

Some have registered and decided that it's not for them anymore.
Simply check when someone was online last, if it's over a month, it's quite unlikely they will be dropping in for answering emails.
