Revealed, the NATO slackers: Why Trump is so infuriated by countries spending less than half their fare share on European defence (and we should be too)
NATO has set its members a target of spending 2% of GDP on defence
France, Germany, Canada and Latvia among countries not meeting target
Trump had earlier suggested US would think twice about coming to the aid of nations who do not meet the recommended spend

Data has revealed the NATO countries who are not spending enough on defense to warrant Donald Trump using US forces to protect them from an attack.

The President elect caused alarm during his election campaign by suggesting Washington would think twice about coming to the aid of an endangered NATO ally if it had not paid its dues.

The alliance has set a target for its members of spending 2 per cent of GDP on defense - but the likes of France, Germany and Canada are among more than 20 members not meeting the objective, figures show
Even Eastern European NATO members Latvia - bordering Russia - and neighbouring Lithuania are projected to spend less than the target level in 2016. Slovakia and Hungary - both bordering Ukraine - do not meet the 2 per cent recommendation either, according to defense one.]/b]

NATO chief warns that the West faces ‘the greatest challenge...

Mr Trump provoked alarm earlier this year by saying that the military alliance was created to confront a threat - the Soviet Union - that no longer exists and has called the alliance 'obsolete' and a bad deal for America. He argues that the US gets too little out of decades-old security partnerships like NATO, which is anchored in Europe but traditionally led by America.

In an interview earlier this year he said he would look to see whether countries had 'fulfilled their obligations to us' before deciding whether to come to their aid in the event of a Russian attack.

The 70-year-old also hit out at EU countries who are not paying their share of the bill for NATO. America picks up more than 70 per cent of the cost.

Britain, Greece, Estonia and Poland are the only other four of the 28 members to have signed up to the spending target. But the likes of France (1.8 per cent), Canada (1 per cent) and Germany (1.2 per cent) are not reaching the suggested level of expenditure. Slovenia, Spain, Belgium and Luxembourg spend less than 1 per cent on defence, the statistics show. Portugal, Bulgaria, Croatia, Albania, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Slovakia, Italy, Czech Republic, Hungary and Canada all spend between 1 per cent and 1.4 per cent.
Meanwhile, France, Turkey, Norway, Lithuania, Romania and Latvia spend between 1.5 and 1.9 per cent of GDP of defence.

Yesterday, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg issued a stark warning that 'going it alone is not an option' following Trump's stunning US election victory. Michael Fallon says Europe must 'step up' and increase defense

And Trump is right, but then the countries not spending 2% are also right - NATO is just a burden on us, what good has it done? Has it stopped any unwanted immigrants? No. Small countries are asked to buy weapons, equipment not suitable for their own defence but for participating in missions in god forsaken parts of the world. I say, NATO needs to be reorganized and given a new purpose. As it is it No Action Talk Only - and this is what you can hear in their HQ in Brussels.

BRUSSELS POWER GRAB: Juncker urged to set up ’EU border guard’ to intervene in ANY country
A HEAVILY armed strike force of Euro border guards should be set up with a mandate to intervene in ANY country even without permission, a top Brussels body has urged today.

Jean-Claude Juncker has been given the green light to press ahead with his controversial dream of an omnipotent paramilitary EU police force by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC).

The influential Brussels think tank adopted an opinion today calling on the unelected EU Commission to found a European Border Guard that would have the “right to intervene” even without the permission of a country’s government.

Its chilling plan was unveiled in a press release today, which justified the draconian measures by claiming they are necessary to uphold the rights to asylum and free movement and the crumbling Schengen zone.

In its missive the EESC - which is regularly consulted by Member State governments - proposed converting the EU’s current border agency Frontex into a fully fledged armed force.

It stated: “This agency should have the right to intervene – upon Commission decision - in case of emergencies.”

The spine-chilling plot raises the possibility of armed euro guards loyal only to unaccountable bureaucrats in Brussels being parachuted in to restore order in EU countries against the express wishes of their people and democratically elected governments.

Rapporteur Giuseppe Iuliano said: "The European Border Guard should be empowered to effectively manage the EU border and support Member States dealing with overwhelming migration pressure.”

Whilst his opinion is not in any way binding, it will act as a further string in Juncker’s bow as his all-powerful EU Commission looks to press ahead with the plans.

It was officially adopted at a plenary session of the EESC held today, meaning it will now be passed on to officials at the Commission for consideration.

In its opinion the body states that the new border force “must be akin to a civilian police force, not a military force” and says that it should have a duty to “inform” the European Parliament and EU Council of its actions.

On continental Europe the vast majority of civilian police forces are heavily armed, with many more akin to paramilitary operations in the eyes of British citizens.

It also includes a pledge to “strictly limit” the new border guard’s “intervention right to well-defined emergencies”, but does not specify what conditions would be attached.

The EESC states: “The European Border Guard should be well trained and organised in order to fulfil its key missions - to rescue people and provide adequate care in respect of fundamental human rights and of the principle of ‘non-refoulement’.”

Non-refoulement is a legal principle by which vulnerable people should not be returned to any oppressor they are fleeing from, usually considered to be a state or government.

Taking about stupidity - they want to intervene in EU countries, i.e. when the people stand up to Brussels nonsense, yet they do not want to do a single thing to defend our external borders against the invasion.

Brussels a.k.a our beloved political establishment. are a bunch of lunatics! Can't wait for the elections in France, damn I hope we will be as brave as the Americans.

The German defence minister, Ursula von der Leyen, on Sunday rejected Donald Trump’s claim that Germany owes Nato and the US “vast sums” of money for defence.

'That's not how it works': Trump's grasp of Nato questioned

“There is no debt account at Nato,” Von der Leyen said in a statement, adding that it was wrong to link the alliance’s target for members to spend 2% of their economic output on defence by 2024 solely to Nato.

“Defence spending also goes into UN peacekeeping missions, into our European missions and into our contribution to the fight against terrorism,” Von der Leyen said.

German defence spending is set to rise by €1.4bn ($1.5bn) to €38.5bn ($41.4bn) in 2018 – a figure that is projected to represent 1.26% of economic output, the finance minister, Wolfgang Schäuble, has said. In 2016, Germany’s defence spending ratio stood at 1.18%.

During her trip to Washington, Merkel reiterated Germany’s commitment to the 2% military spending goal.
