MnanahEireann: In cases where a pill has made a difference (and there really are such cases) then it is a chemical imbalance. I have seen this with my own eyes. .and its not that the person becomes addicted or gets a high, they simply become normalised again and capable of dealing with normal day to day life where before they were not capable of normality. Its not the cure for everyone but for some it is and is worth a try. For those for whom this is not the answer its more complicated and unfortunately these are the ones whose suffering is prolonged trying all the different methods

Yes you're right, some people need their chemical balance corrected, to help them live functional and better lives.
This is where I agree with the video Capricorn posted, somewhat.
The medical industry have been too reliant on handing out pills to people that don't need them. The corrupt Pharma industry has sold society on a pill being the answer to their life's problems. The trial and error in finding the right combination of pills can have adverse effects and to me, its not always the answer.
Fortunately times are changing somewhat and Medical Professionals are now not just relying on medication but treating people in a more holistic way.
People are different and while medication can and does work for some, for others it's not the answer and indeed can lead to other problems.

Ok, I will admit that I hadn't seen the video Capricorn posted when I got involved in the depression discussion. I have now watched it. I think it is a very insensitive and misinformed video. Depression IS an illness. A person who suffers from severe depression is not to blame for it, and it is not caused by their life choices, or anything like that. It is a FACT that it is a chemical imbalance in the brain. He may have a point about millenials sharing too much on social media and people with comfortable lives moaning and saying they are depressed when a lot them actually aren't really, they just don't know what it means to actually really be depressed. Some people don't know the difference between the real illness of depression and just plain sadness or dissatisfaction with life. Its not the same thing, thats where the confusion lies.
There is a lot more openess now about it, and I disagree with the guy in the video that its a bad thing, people suffered a lot more in the past when they were expected to bottle things up and be tough. The problem is differentiating between the genuine illness and spoilt brats who expect too much from life, and expect to get it without working for it.
